American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) calmly floating in the water at the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area near Lisbon, Florida.

As I drove slowly by on the Wildlife Drive, I woke up this gator floating near the shore.

Clouds from an approaching storm begin to build near Hudson Beach during Golden Hour near Hudson, Florida. Calling this a beach is a stretch with a breakwall protecting the sand from the Gulf of Mexico waters. There is a very small beach on the canal not far from where I took this photo.

I framed this photo to show the impending storm coming towards Hudson Beach out of the southeast 35 minutes before sunset. The golden light from the Sun as it approached the horizon reached under the picnic pavilions and brought out the browns of the breakwall masonry. People were beginning to come in to enjoy the ending of the day.

I took this photo 30 minutes before yesterday's post.

Sunset from Hudson Beach with storm clouds near Hudson, Florida.

Was hoping for some after sunset lighting on all the clouds but, alas, there was a front with high clouds off the coast and the Sun disappeared behind them. Storm clouds were coming in from the south, too.

In my previous photo, I shared a peaceful scene of a Limpkin but a mile down the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area Wildlife Drive near Lisbon, Florida, I spotted this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) hunting on a thick patch of floating water plants. I decided to watch it to see if he would be successful at catching some food. Thirty minutes later, I heard a splash and the Heron had gotten its fish. It flew a short distance then started to get the fish into the right orientation to go headfirst into its mouth before starting to swallow it.

This photo shows the Great Blue Heron almost finished swallowing the fish into its neck which will head into the Heron's stomach to be digested. Survival in Nature is violent thus a predator lives on and the fish in the water do not overpopulate and make the marsh unlivable for all the species calling the marsh home.

A Limpkin (Aramus guarauna) stands at the edge of the water in early morning light at the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area near Lisbon, Florida.

As a human observer, this looks like a peaceful scene. For the Limpkin, food is on its mind as it stands. It will soon start to forage looking for its favorite meal, an Apple Snail. Unless it comes upon a small frog or turtle first.

As a photographer, I look for light, color and composition. I wish the Limpkin well and thank it for the opportunity to document a moment of its life.

Its not often I get new photo equipment. This one has been on my list for a couple of years. This week I purchased the Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens for my Nikon Z9 mirrorless camera.

I took it out to the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area in Florida to see if I would enjoy using it. I found it well balanced for hand holding with the Z9. The extra reach over the Z 100-400mm was very welcome. I think I'll keep it. 😊

Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) flying over the Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Del Ray Beach, Florida.

I had never seen a Wood Stork until I moved to Florida last year. Even then I had only seen one or two where I lived. Well, at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, they were all over as it is nesting season. Wood Storks filled the trees close to the boardwalk as pairs of them tended to their nests and eggs. Adults where flying back to the nests with food and sticks for their mates giving me lots of opportunities to capture them in flight.

I liked this photo as the stork's head is in front of the black of its wing showing all the details. Their heads are bald so as not to accumulate bacteria, blood, or mud on their skin while feeding in the muddy bottom of the marsh.

After a grooming, a Green Heron (Butorides virescens) needed a good stretch in the Green Cay Wetlands and Nature Center in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Green Cay Wetlands is a 100 acre nature preserve located in Boynton Beach which is another marsh oasis surrounded by gated million dollar plus communities. The former farm owners sold the property for 1/3 of its appraised value with the condition it would be made into a wetland for wildlife and future generations of Floridians to enjoy.

I used a Nikon Z9 with Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens.

Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor) in mating plumage photographed at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Del Ray Beach, Florida.

This was my first visit to the Wakodahatchee Wetlands which is 50 acres of freshwater marsh habitat in the middle of urban sprawl in Del Rey. It features a boardwalk allowing people to get very close to nesting birds each Spring. I photographed this Tricolored Heron while it was in its nest with beautiful breeding colors around the eye, beak and feathers. I was barely in focus distance of 3 feet for the lens I was using.

I used a Nikon Z9 with Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens.

Enjoyed an evening of photographing this beautiful female Snail Kite at Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area in Florida.
