I've been a little quiet on here but since it's International Dark Sky Week, posting one from the archives to celebrate.

The Milky Way over Lake Leelanau from a roadside park in the heart of Leelanau County. The beauty of the night sky along with various sources of light pollution from surrounding areas that often hinder our ability to observe the night sky. Dark Sky Week helps bring awareness to the impact of light pollution in our night skies. Please do what you can to help protect the night sky.

A 12 image panorama of the Milky Way Arch over frozen Lake Leelanau on a clear February morning from Leland. On the left side of the arch there's faint aurora in the sky, though it's drowned out by someone's green property light. On the opposite side of the arch, is the beloved Milky Way Core and below that is some really bright light pollution from Traverse City. And you know what this means... Milky Way season is here!! I'm so happy!

This time of year, the core appears in the south eastern sky, early in the morning. Early risers, this ones you. I use PhotoPills, which says the core is currently visible from 4:41am to 6:01am on a clear, cloud free sky. Time to seize the night, weather permitting.

Happy National Michigan Day to all who celebrate!! We're so blessed to live in such a great state. No better way to celebrate than sharing another image from a few nights ago.

The western portion of the Milky Way over the D.H. Day Farm Barn on a crisp clear winter night within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. What's better than that?!
