Twenty-five years later, I can still remember where I was. I know so many of y’all can, too. 🇺🇸
September 11, 2001 changed our country and millions of lives forever. That day, 2,977 innocent people were murdered. Among them, 343 FDNY firefighters answered their final call, and 72 law enforcement officers lost their lives, including 37 Port Authority officers and 23 NYPD officers. We also remember Sirius, the Port Authority police K-9 who never made it home.
Every one of those 2,977 people had a name. A family. A life they should have gotten to finish.
And the loss didn’t end there. We honor those who have since died from illnesses connected to their service and exposure, and the countless families, first responders, and survivors who still carry the weight of that day.
Today, our own firefighters and police officers, alongside first responders across this country, are holding the line for them. Carrying on their legacy of service. Answering the call. Taking care of their communities, knowing what that responsibility can ask of them. To our guys and gals here in Lewisville: we see you, we love you, and we don’t take your service for granted.
One of the most meaningful parts of being a photographer is getting to witness how people show up for one another. Through the happiest days, the hardest moments, and mornings like this one, when we pause together to remember. I may be looking through a camera, but I’m feeling it right along with everyone else.
The hurt. The anger. The gratitude for those who ran toward danger. Even after 25 years, it’s all still there.
Today, I had the privilege of photographing our Lewisville Fire and Police Departments’ remembrance ceremony before heading straight to my alma mater, Lewisville High School, for theirs. Two beautiful ceremonies, one community taking the time to honor lives we will never forget.
Being back at LHS made this Farmer’s heart especially proud. The choir, the guard, ROTC, and student council helped create such a thoughtful tribute. These students weren’t even born when September 11 happened, but the care and respect they brought to remembering it meant something.
They don’t have their own memories of that morning. Today, they helped carry ours.
And y’all, if these are the young people who will be leading us, I have a whole lot of hope for our future. 🤍
Sharing a few previews from both ceremonies. Thank you for trusting me to document something that means so much.
Today, we remembered. We honored. And we stood together as a community. We will never forget. 🇺🇸
