Fall in New England, Fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we all love to travel and see nature's glorious change of seasons while grumbling about the mediocre color we get at home. But look a little closer at Lexington's Gibson Pond Park, Mother Nature flicked her paint brush through the pines to give us a treat.

Old dogs, new tricks again. The music of our local Celtic Folk Rock band, SYR can be so moving that a good performance photo just isn't enough. Improvising with the music, here's an expression of the joy of being at their performance at Tartan Day South.

Droning about my hometown, Columbia, SC I find satisfaction in new views of old subjects. Looking North, the State House becomes the centerpiece of a modern downtown city. Sleepy Soda City is alive and going places.

Remember when you got your first big job to shoot - that wedding, football championship, political convention and all the little challenges in between. Last week it was time to abandon my comfort zone and take another flying leap. I've been flying the drone for a couple of years, doing stills and an occasional video clip, earned my part 107 license too.
Then a good client asked me to do videos of six apartment complexes in the Columbia area for their web site complete, with tight editing, continuous motion and music.
Not having traveled this route, I enlisted the aid of grandson, Andrew Walker. With his coaching and editing, Grandpa made the jump to a new skill set.
We're never too old to ignore lessons from the younger generation. Stay current, take a leap!

Last night the "Wolf Moon" was rising while the afterglow from the setting sun let mother nature paint a fleeting golden palette on the facades of downtown Columbia. I had the good fortune to take notes.

In this time of Covid Christmas with masking, social distancing, imminent infection it's good to look back at a time when Christmas in Columbia started with the Governor's Carolighting. We could mingle shoulder to shoulder, sing carols, hug, kiss and sneeze without worry. 50 years ago, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, 1970, the crowd even spilled into Gervais St.

On this more sedate Christmas Eve Lynn and I wish all friends, family and clients a safe and healthy holiday season. The New Year promises new beginnings, pandemic relief and happy days again!

I was looking for some old negatives this rainy Saturday morning and came across this assignment from March, 1972 for the Charlotte Observer.
Those were the days when one's kit was a pair of Leica M-2's and Tri-X film developed in D-76 was the everyday norm.
Moving into the digital age, the brown fingernails and Dektol stained shirts were gladly exchanged for bleary eyes as Photoshop CS1 took up to an hour to render a 8x10 file.
But traveling into the past with modern scanners and software will pull amazing detail from ancient negatives and transparencies. Brilliant digital prints are now possible from images which would have been dull, grainy and off color a short time ago.
This town has almost faded from the South Carolina landscape. Several buildings seen here were moved to Santee, SC and live on as a bar-b-que restaurant.
But we will remember when O.K. Zeagler, postmaster of Lone Star, SC 29030 kept the town alive.

So many of us, our children and grandchildren wonder what path our life's work is going to be. I'm either fortunate or cursed that I wanted to be a photographer with absolute clarity.
Starting in the 6th grade with my Argus Super 75, I moved up to a pair of Argus C-3's by the 8th grade. By High School it was Leica's and Rollei's.
This week I found some of my early photojournalism taken with the C-3 and scanned them. These are of President Eisenhower taken in Charlotte on May 18, 1954.
It's a good feeling to look back and see that your career is a straight line from there to the present, not withstanding a few bumps in the road.

Still managing a socially distant 400' above the crowd, my Mavic Pro drone went to the State House last night. It's a viewpoint that makes Columbia's hodgepodge downtown look like a really uptown location.

In this slow, reclusive period I've been working on a drone project. It's socially distant, don't have to see or speak to anyone, just go and fly. I have a client's property, Saluda Reserve, to photograph and have been expanding the imaging possibilities. These four views were created from the same 26 frame set of RAW files by using the compositing possibilities in Microsoft ICE. A public domain program originally created for astronomical use in mapping the galaxy, it works pretty good on the Saluda River too.
