It's been hot each day, so getting off the boat and getting wet is nice. I returned to the eastern shore of Charleston Bay, this time jumping off the boat and swimming towards the rocky shore. For the most part, it's all seagrass and sand until you're within 100-150 yards from shore, where gorgonians, rocks, and coral begin to rise from the ocean floor to the shoreline. I also found a large section of wreck between the moorings, and the one mooring I checked is one I would recommend no one use!

Today I tried a new snorkel spot on the eastern shoreline of Charleston Bay in Canouan, St. Vincent and Grenadines. The majority of the shoreline is rocks covered with thick algae, but tall gorgonians, encrusting, brain and finger corals, as well as a variety of sponges, can be found scattered throughout your snorkel. Depths ranged from 1 to 15 feet. Enjoyed seeing a nice variety of species and some great fish cleaning stations. Worthwhile to snorkel here!

Today we snorkeled the north part of Grand Bay (or Charlestown Bay) near White Rock and then along the shoreline. On the morning of July 1, 2024 Hurricane Beryl hit Canouan island as a Cat 4 and heavily impacted 80-90% of the island's homes and infrastructure. It also impacted the sea floor underwater 80-90% of the reef was also impacted. Gorgonians were pulled up like weeds. We do not know the state of the reef before the storm but now we can see that the finger and other hard corals are now skeletons. On a positive note, there are a good variety of reef fish. The gorgonians, corals and sponges are slowly rebuilding. There is still a good amount of debris in the water from the hurricane. Portions of roofs, building materials and other items were scattered and/or piled up on the bottom. The island of Canouan has done a great job rebuilding. We are hopeful the reef will do the same.

We found two new to us species for this part of the Caribbean - a slender filefish and a spotted Trunkfish. We also saw a large ray, Brazilian octopus, hundreds of grunts, lettuce sea slugs, wrasses, squirrelfish and more. The visibility was better near the wall and on the north side of the rocks.

On the Canauon town pier, you’ll find Homestyle Parlour in one of the new freight container buildings. Christal, her husband, and son cook up some delicious southern eastern Caribbean specialties with big smiles and appreciate the cruiser business. We tried their doubles, a chicken fry pie and a cheese fry pie. All delicious!

With two local Hairoun Lager Beers, and a big bottle of water the total for lunch was $59EC (about $20US).

Definitely stop by if you visit Canuoan!

Canouan is about 25 miles south of St. Vincent. It is around 3½ miles long by 1¼ miles at its widest point. The northern half is privately owned and, unfortunately, gated. Residents live in and around the main settlement, Charlestown, which is also the location of the island’s main wharf and is where we are anchored.

Canouan’s airport is in the southwest and accommodates small passenger jets. The marina makes up the remainder of the southern portion of the island.

There are several white sand beaches along both the leeward and windward coastlines. The beach at Charlestown Bay (also known as Grand Bay) is popular with locals as well as with visiting cruisers. On the south coast, Friendship Bay has a long stretch of beach. Running along the windward coastline from Point De Jour in the north down to Barbruce Bay in the south is Grand Cois, an extensive and visually stunning barrier reef which can easily be seen from the roads above.

The name Canouan emanated from the Kalinago word “Cannoun” which means turtle. It was the Kalinago who established themselves as the island’s dominant settlers long before European arrival. When the Europeans arrived in the 16th century, the English and French fought for ownership, and Canouan became a subject of multiple treaties between the 2 nations. In 1770, King George III gifted Canouan to 5 families: Brisbane, Decato, De Gazeau, Patrice, and Snagg. The Snagg brothers eventually accumulated 1,700 of the 1,830 acres available, which they mostly used for the cultivation of sugar. When sugar became less profitable, they switched to the cultivation of cotton.

Just arrived in Canouan after a 20 mile sail south from Bequia. Beautiful waters and a great sail down. The One Fest festival is ongoing this weekend so have a feeling that it will be a “loud” weekend.

A pub crawl starts at 1pm. Our Manta friends are attending. Not really our thing so we’ll take a walk. Looking forward to snorkeling around the rocks in front of us tomorrow.
