Table poses? Props? Lifestyle all the way?
When I first really started to fall in love with photographing newborns, I would see someone’s work I admired and think, “yes! that’s how I want my work to look” - then I’d come across another photographer and say “oooh, but I want it to feel more like that” - then another, “but oh how precious, I adore that traditional pose!”
I was unknowingly putting myself in a place of pressure trying to decide exactly what *type* of newborn photographer I wanted to be.
And while there certainly is value in really dialing it in, it’s not the perfect froggy I’m after. It’s the comfortable baby who leads the session at her own pace, in her own space. It’s the connection and the emotion of a nursing mama in her bed or the pure adorableness of a baby posed in a bowl, bed or basket. It’s planning a photography experience with care that the meets mama where she is and also takes into consideration her home, her color preferences, her vibe so her pictures will go beautifully on her wall. It’s the intentionality behind all of it. (And of course it’s the baby snuggles, always the baby snuggles.)
So I’m leaning into not knowing exactly what the flow of each session will look like. Does this make them take a little longer? Sometimes. Does it mean I haul things to people’s homes we don’t end up using. Occasionally. But ultimately it leads to a slow-paced, baby-led and thoughtfully prepared for experience that is truly custom to each family’s space and story.
It’s where my heart is 🤍
