I’ve always preferred portraits that feel like the person actually belongs in the picture.
A comfortable setting, good light and not much fuss.
That’s usually enough.

Cloudline
New Caledonia has a way of making scale hard to judge. The mountains would disappear into the clouds, then show themselves again for a few seconds.
This was one of those moments.

The Rail. What I like most about this image is how the race stretches across the frame. The color, spacing and repetition almost turn it into a pattern before you start noticing the individual horses and riders.
I’ve been revisiting the edit recently, and this is the version I’m happiest with.

My sister starts her Alaska cruise today, which sent me back into photographs from my own trip.

The scale you find shooting in Alaska is unlike almost anywhere else I've photographed. A ship that feels substantial becomes a tiny reference point beneath a glacier. A small piece of floating ice turns out to be crowded with birds. And a waterfall can nearly disappear into the forest surrounding it.

Three photographs and three different reminders to keep looking.

Magnitude. Gathering. Revealed.

Took a little mental journey back to Port Chalmers, New Zealand (near Dunedin) today to edit a few more favorite shots of the seals. If you get a chance, go.

A young robin fell from its nest in our backyard this morning. Mom eventually swooped in with breakfast, cautiously watching for intruders.
