Hey friends, delivered us all the gift of George Rollie as the moon came up over the horizon on Sunday evening. It was an amazing, natural, primal, zero-intervention birth with a nurse midwife Deann helping out and I couldn’t be more proud of our little family. Mom and baby boy are good and beautiful and recovering well. We’re all excited for a calm, colorful autumn chillin in our crib. My name is Dad now!

JOHN PRINE (1946-2020)

Now is a time that I mourn.

His songs often felt like a hug, or a slap on the back and a good laugh, or a handhake, or a knowing squeeze of shoulders. For certain they were made to dance with. While he so clearly had made amends with the inevitability of death quite a long time ago, the great tragedy of this is that his occurs at a time when we can’t do any of the above, which I believe is the solace he may have relied upon in finding peace with the end; when you go, at least folks can come together in love, and hold each other. John set us up to celebrate him in death together, with laughter and song and dance, toasts and shared bottles, hugs, gatherings and performance, and with the knowledge that we’ll join him before too long, and the peace an clarity that comes with that knowledge. And instead we’re locked in our rooms with his records and our memories, with not much to touch aside from the floor.

It’s sort of like, well, like being half way to hell with paradise waiting just five miles away from wherever you are.

I spent a couple weeks of September back home in Nebraska and finally got to go through some pics today. A reliable surprise happened at the farm when a hen hatched eggs that she had been keeping hidden under a pile of trash—the day before the trash man came to haul it away, no less. Another nice surprise was meeting Linda at the Florence Mill in Omaha due to taking a wrong turn. A 30-second stop to read her historical marker turned into a full afternoon tour of the mill. Reliably dramatic dawns and dusks came and went. I got to see my cousin get married and got to see Ms. G at my brother’s apartment, and I got to spend time with dear friends Morgan and Kyle. I got to see my goddaughter/niece for an excruciatingly brief hour—she spent that time playing with a cicada...and I won 200 bucks at the Sticky Wicket croquet tournament. Best of all is I spent time with most of my family talking, walking, fixing stuff, remembering stuff and anticipating stuff. That time was so sorely needed I barely remembered to take any pictures of them at all. Anyways today is my mom’s birthday and a cold day back home. Happy birthday mom, stay warm! @ Nebraska

October 18 is the birthday of my brother, Aug Augustine. Many call him Josh, but not me. Anyways, it’s a good night to seek out your favorite things and enjoy those things with hearty merriment. It’s what Aug would do, and what he would have you do too as long as your favorite things aren’t poorly thought out. Happy birthday Aug, what are you now, a thousand?

Liesbeth’s path to citizenship continues this month with our filing of the Form I-751 Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. This is for the USCIS to confirm that our marriage is bona fide. We haven’t yet run off to buy a house and make babies just yet, so we need a little back-up evidence to support the evidence that we do have. Thus, I’m hijacking my own account to solicit some help. Friends and family who have known us both for at least the last couple years can substantially ease our lives by providing an affidavit that explains how you know us, and how you know for a fact that we are a bona fide hubs-waff duo. Could be a story about us fighting or accidentally seein us rubbin on each other or just an explanation of your knowledge of us doin things that people only do for each other when their lives truly revolve around each other’s goals, dreams, successes, struggles and messes around the house. If you think you can help and you want to, send an note to the email link in my bio and I’ll direct you to a website that shows how to format such an affidavit, and lists the info you’d like to include. We want as many as possible, so don’t be shy! Thanks in advance friendly affiants! And if you follow me and don’t know either of us, now you at least know what I look like and can marvel at how impossibly “up” a guy can marry, if he’s lucky. 😘

Took an impromptu trip to and went full beach bum with over the weekend. Drove 25 miles into total coastal seclusion, got the Blazer stuck, and set up camp. As a bonus the island is phone reception-free—it’s alluded to as a slight inconvenience or considerate warning, but it should also be advertised as a feature in my opinion. We saw many nice birds, a ghost crab chucking sand out of her little sand cave, and L even charmed a sea turtle enough to allow us to shake hands/flippers and wish each other long, happy, plastic-free lives (The visitor’s center gives out free trash bags to help with their beach junk problems. We took two and filled them up in a 200 yard stretch of beach around our camp. Should have grabbed 20 bags! It’s mostly not park visitor’s trash—it’s from all over the Gulf and washing up out of currents. Lots of straws, water bottles, and bottle caps. The plastic problem is not hippy tree hugger hysteria! It’s truly a pathetic impression our species is leaving on this earth. It’s everywhere, even in these secluded, natural spaces. Most of y’all can reduce your plastic! Try a week during which you only buy three items containing or wrapped in plastic per day, just to get a feeling of what you use, and then scale down further if you can. Discipline is freedom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ). Over 48 hours the world around me turned many dramatic colors and the sand and salt permeated everything including my very soul. We ran out of food and beer so we left, but maybe we should have just stayed, food and beer be damned. Anyways, be good out there. .

Everybody, look at this woman. She is a bright light in this world. If you don't know her I want you to. She is one of those people that makes you feel a little more complete, lucky to be alive, and happy to be awake and human. May you get the chance if you have not yet...
