Native to tropical rainforests of Australia and New Guinea, southern cassowaries are said to resemble dinosaurs in a modern landscape thanks to their unique appearance. These flightless birds have a 5-inch long razor sharp claw on each foot, and a helmet-like casque that adorns the top of their head. Found in sand deserts from Turkmenistan to parts of Russia is the piebald shrew. A pocket-sized species that reaches no more than three inches in length, these tiny shrews feed on insects and their larvae, ants, and occasionally, small lizards. Meet King Max, a king vulture I photographed at Gladys Porter Zoo. Hatched in 2006, this handsome fellow was hand-reared by his care team, and in 2018, moved to Belize to act as an ambassador for his wild counterparts. This tiny baby is a critically endangered northern spider tortoise. You might think its name refers to its small size, but this species is actually named for the web-like pattern of yellow lines on its dark brown shell. Female spider tortoises only lay one egg per clutch, and eggs incubate for up to 250 days before hatching, which means populations cannot recover quickly from a decrease in numbers. Servals like this one I photographed at Lincoln Children's Zoo are sometimes referred to as 'the giraffe cat' because of their unusually long necks and legs. They have the longest legs relative to their body size among any wild cat - an attribute that allows them to jump straight up about 10 feet into the air!
