If only I knew then what I know now… this is my oldest child- he was 14 days old in the photos. I was so impressed with how strong and advanced he was! What I didn’t realize was that his body was actually wrestling in a battle against tension.
We struggled with breastfeeding (he could not maintain a latch plus it was painful), lots of spit up, “colic and gas”, witching hours of crying, lots of arching, and I was a mom who didn’t know how to help her baby.
Body tension in babies can impact feeding abilities (oral function), cause head turn preferences, excessive fussiness, reflux, constipation, stiff or rigid body & in general, just an uncomfortable baby.
As lactation consultants, we see many babies for trouble with feedings at breast and with bottle: painful latch, milk leaking, clicking, gulping, shallow latch, pulling away from breast or bottle frequently PLUS more! 😟 it’s our job to help a family maximize comfort and efficiency with feeding their baby, but to also identify if tension is present and offer info about what resources we have in ETX for infant bodywork! Chiropractics, infant physical therapy, craniosacral therapy, etc..
With a team approach, addressing feeding mechanics and baby’s body tension- we see wonderful outcomes: happier babies & less stress on mama who is working hard in feeding her baby!
