Something has shifted lately. As life constantly demands so much from us, there’s suddenly this wild desire for slow, simple moments.
And honestly, there is a new rich now — the time, space, and capacity to truly be present.
How often do we rush through our days because we have timeframes and deadlines to be conscious of? I experience this so often. So much so that I realized that full presence at any point in my day was rare.
This fact hit hard a couple months back when I revisited some old home videos from when I was a kid in the 90s. In one video, I was with my cousins around the holidays and we were taking turns singing on the karaoke machine. The part that got me though? Every parent and grandparent was in the room with us, FULLY PRESENT. 🤯
There were no cell phones in sight. No distractions. Just each other. Talking, laughing, and actually living in that moment together. It was so bittersweet to watch.
How beautiful that we got to experience that in life, but how sad is it that those ways are basically gone? Unless, we put them into practice.
So, I came up with the idea of habit stacking the art of practicing presence. To start, it felt easiest to pair this my morning coffee. Every time that I make coffee now, that’s my cue to set my phone aside and tune into what’s going on around me.
It can be hard to get grounded in presence at first because we are so used to having the distraction of our phones and easy access to dopamine hits, but if you go through the five senses to begin, that helps.
Once I get better at upkeeping the presence that my boys deserve from me, I plan on implementing more moments to habit stack in throughout my day until I get to the point where my cell phone is being treated like a house phone.
And maybe this all sounds crazy to you, but I’m practicing presence like it’s my job right now because it is. Literally. And not only that, it’s my life. And yours, too.
So, if you feel the need to practice presence and give yourself the gift of the moment, then join me by setting distractions aside while you have your morning coffee and let me know how it goes.
The 90s were the best. Let’s bring that feeling b
