So often I’ve heard people say they were just going for a short walk, sticking to the boardwalk, or staying close to the road so they didn’t need bear spray. 🤦🏻‍♀️ If you’re going to be where grizzlies live, it’s a good idea to always carry bear spray. You never know when you might encounter a bear, even in the most unexpected of places. Boardwalks, roads, parking lots, and trails are all part of their habitat too… they don’t recognize our boundaries the way we do.

You know what day it is! Actually, you might be confused since there’s like, Moose Monday, Marmot Monday, Mountain Goat Monday, etc etc BUT if you had another guess, I’d hope you’d say Mustelid Monday! Here’s a *brief* moment with a small mustelid, a long tailed weasel in his summer attire.

Tips for spotting a great grey owl:
- Look, don’t listen. You likely won’t hear these birds, silent flight, and they aren’t very chatty. So watch for movement.
- Listen! But not for the owls, listen for angry squirrels or annoyed corvids.
- GGO’s are a pretty large species of owl, but contradictory, like the perch rather low. You’ll often find them on 4’ tall snags and fence posts. Or atop a young pine tree (see photo 😉)
- Crepuscular. Not as nocturnal as other owl species, and particularly in the GYE, prefer diurnal hunting, so when you spot an owl in broad daylight, it’s likely to be a GGO! 🦉

He’s not as dainty or graceful as the lady bears that navigate these fallen trees - he literally busted through some of the dead fall instead of balance beaming across 😂, he’s very large, and very droolly. And you ‘feel’ his presence. He was in hot pursuit of some female companionship, but the ladies high tail it away from him, preferring the smaller boar for a more even playing field. My third time ever seeing this force of a bear, thanks to identification tips from my favorite bear identifier, I’ll be able to positively spot him now on. 🐻
