It's day six of my summer vacation ideas with a little bit of History. Today's post is Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village located near Milesburg/ Howard Pennsylvania in Centre County PA.
This iron furnace is one of a kind. It is the largest in the state of Pennsylvania that is preserved. It has a lot of history, The founder came from Ireland and worked many different jobs before becoming a iron furnace master. One of his sons became Pennsylvania Governor during the Civil War and was friends with Abraham Lincoln.
The location was a very strategic idea but not the first location when the founder Roland Curtin started the iron furnace. His original location is only a mile away from present Eagle Iron works. If you've taken I-80 between Milesburg exit and Bellefonte/ I99 in Pennsylvania You have driven right past the original iron furnace location. The current location is between two important transportation things, a canal and the railroad. Roland helped fund the Bald Eagle and Spring Creek Navigation Company which was the canal as it connected Mill Hall to Bellefonte, originally was supposed to go to Port Matilda. And the railroad was one of the busiest. If not the busiest train station stop on the Bald Eagle Valley (that is now Nittany and Bald eagle).
Tours are starting soon. Make sure to check out their page for more information you might be able to see. Mike and I plus little one at one of the tours.
