As fair week comes to a close, I've been looking back through all of the memories I captured, and I just keep coming back to this specific picture. 🤍
I overheard a few mommas talking this week about how much these shows mean to their families, and it got me thinking. Even though the classes might be a little smaller these days, the tradition behind them is anything but. It is exhausting, it is emotional, and it takes a lot of hard work.
I'll be honest... I think we've become a little disconnected from agriculture. I've had people ask me how some eggs become chicks and some don't. I've even had people ask how cows "start making milk." (Mamas... I think we know the answer to that one. 😂) No guys, they don't make milk for the fun of it.
That's exactly why I love our county fairs.
They remind us where our food comes from and introduce us to the families who care for these animals every single day. Dairy cows aren't market animals headed to auction, they go back home to continue producing milk, raising the next generation, and carrying on family herds that, for many, have been around for generations.
It made me smile knowing that this same tradition is celebrated all across Ohio. I even saw this year at the OSU fair, they are unveiling a beautifully renovated Dairy Products Building, home of the famous Butter Cow. It's a reminder that while the way we live may change, the importance of Ohio's dairy families and the role they play in feeding our communities remains as strong as ever. 🐄🎡🌾
