Puerto Rico announces emergency water rationing as drought worsens!
On Thursday, Puerto Rico announced water rationing measures as drought grips the territory, forcing the governor to declare a state of emergency. Executive President Luis González stated thousands in Canovanas and Rio Grande face 48-hour rationing periods starting Friday.
The U.S. Drought Monitor estimates 14% of Puerto Rico is currently under severe drought and 59% under moderate drought, with approximately 2.3 million of the 3.2 million inhabitants living in affected regions.
Residents pay up to $700 per week for water, while businesses pay up to $3,500 per week. Rep. Domingo J. Torres criticized the Water and Sewer Authority for failing to present a clear plan to guarantee access.
Gov. Jenniffer González acknowledged the agency's infrastructure has lacked maintenance for decades. Legislators held a public hearing this week on the financial impacts, following a separate outage last month that affected 40,000 customers.
Previous droughts have forced strict rationing in Puerto Rico, with 400,000 utility customers receiving water only every third day in 2016. Critics argue severe shortages began in populated areas months before the current drought.

Influencers draw backlash for attending OpenAI’s first luxury trip!
Over the weekend, OpenAI hosted influencers at Wildflower Farms in New York for its first-ever brand trip, branded 'Summer Camp,' timed to the launch of ChatGPT Work. The luxury retreat immediately sparked widespread online criticism.
OpenAI faces a 'narrative change problem' as public skepticism grows over AI's energy consumption and environmental impact. The retreat aimed to foster positive associations through influencer partnerships to counter these mounting concerns.
Creators posted about workshops and beekeeping at Wildflower Farms, where rooms can top $2,000 a night. Commenters labeled the event 'greenwashing' and 'dystopian,' citing the irony of luxury retreats while AI infrastructure strains resources.
Attendee Grace McCarrick defended her participation Monday, saying she valued 'being in the room with people who work on this product.' OpenAI stated it welcomes 'healthy debate' regarding creator engagement.
The retreat backfired as an 'image problem' itself, demonstrating the difficulty of building trust when the public remains deeply skeptical of AI's broader societal impact. OpenAI's strategy collided with mounting concerns over data-center resource consumption.
