ROSEATE TERN - Huron Pier, Erie County

Monster bird away from the Atlantic coastline...
Super stupidly rare with only a couple records ever in Ohio.
Rough shooting out there but I'll take these shots any day.

Happy 2024! While I haven't spent a lot of time this year with birding (or photography) I was still able to get out with my wife Erin on January 1st to keep our tradition of birding the entire day long. We started our day on a boat trip into the Cleveland harbor to try and spot some rarities with the Black Swamp Bird Observatory. We were able to find the long standing Brant that's been in the Cleveland since the beginning of November and it was with a group of Canada Geese paddling around the east side of the harbor. Later that day after the boat trip we were able to hook up with this bird again in much better conditions as it was foraging on the north side of the Cleveland Browns stadium in a small patch of lawn that is there.

Brant are rare visitors to Ohio and not normally known to last for such a long time in one area. While they can typically be found in small flocks or solo with other geese streaming by during lakewatches, this bird seems to be very content with the local squad of Canada Geese it has latched onto.

I don’t have words to describe the amazing experience of having an Ancient Murrelet show up in my city’s harbor today. Found by my friends Alecia and Janice about noon today so my wife and I raced down to the Lorain fishing piers for a look. Only the 2nd state record of this species in Ohio since 1951 ! This is a type of Alcid which is a small seabird of the western coastal regions of North America. What an early xmas present! Ohio #359 / Lorain #298 🔥

This is a Limpkin. A what?!..

I just scored my 297th county life bird this morning in Avon Lake with this unreal find by a woman out for a walk in her local park yesterday evening. It was then refound in a small creek after a long area-wide search this morning by Jake B. (thanks!)

Limpkin are tropical wading birds most reasonably found in Florida living off of apple snails. Closely related to rails and cranes, they’re the only species in their taxonomic family and are sometimes confused with an ibis or a heron.

Local celebrity. This Purple Gallinule is way out of range and usually only found in Florida or the Gulf Coast but strangely will expand their horizons from time to time. This bird has been hanging in Erie County at Pipe Creek in Sandusky Ohio since May 6th (and continues still as of the 22nd).

Ohio (358) and my hometown Lorain County (296) HEERMANN'S GULL. This west coast bird was last seen in Ohio AT THIS EXACT LOCATION in 1980 🤯.

There has been a lot of a weird vagrancy with this gull in recent years where they normally just stick to a very tight range along the west coast and rarely venture more than ten miles inland. Weirdly these gulls have a reverse migration where they breed southern California/Mexico in the summer and move north barely into British Columbia during the non-breeding season.

Finally went out this evening to see our current superstar rarity on the Black River right in downtown Lorain. This juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake just put on a show not 10 yards or less in front of me. So close sometimes I couldn't even take a photo. This stunning ocean dwelling bird will live almost their entire life at sea except to nest along rocky cliff sides of the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Arctic oceans.

Ohio's first record of a Glaucous-winged Gull was found this weekend by Anthony Rodgers on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. Insane find. This is my 356th Ohio bird.

My friend Austin wanted to chase a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in the middle of Ohio on Sunday that had been hanging around for a few days. I picked him up from the Lorain Impound but first wanted to check for sparrows. We found what we thought was a Nelson's Sparrow but upon further review it was instead a much better bird, a Leconte's Sparrow.... and I left my camera in the car!! I thought I was just picking him up 🤦‍♂️. Live and learn. Luckily we also scored the Scissor-tailed which was an Ohio lifer for Austin and an all-around life bird for me. I've dreamt many times of seeing this bird in person and it didn't disappoint at all.

Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are long tailed kingbirds which breed throughout Texas & Oklahoma and their surrounding states and are easily prone to wandering around as rare visitors all over the place. This adult male with an absurdly, comically long tail was a real treat to see perching and flycatching from power lines as is typical for the species.

It was a fun day all around hanging with Austin and snagging two rare birds together. A new dynamic duo could be forming here...
