This years drought drought on the south plains has been brutal. Recent rains have helped the drip irrigation by making wetting the seed bed to get germination. At the same time planting dryland is a difficult decision.

However, the recent rains have not been a big help to the wildlife. What has been helpful is the drip irrigation systems and small leaks at irrigation wells and pivot systems. Quail and other wildlife visit those places regularly and most don't get far away.

Numerous tracks and various birds can be seen visiting these spots for the precious water in a dry year. This morning I saw three different pairs of scaled quail with a number of hatchlings. Years like this are generally hard on quail but hopefully rains will come soon and they will be able to thrive this summer.

With the drought, the birds and wildlife are really coming into the stock ponds. What are really noticeable is the water and shore birds. They are staying near the small bodies of water that are few and far between on the South Plains. These are mostly wading birds and shore birds but occasionally there are some ducks such as Mallards.

After changing water this morning, I headed down to the stock ponds to see what I could get. This morning was a good day for photography on the Llano Estacado just above Yellow House Canyon as I was able to relax while sitting and watching and listening to the birds and a few other critters that came along.

I'll start out with one of my favorites in the painted bunting. I have been hearing them but they have been hard to locate. This morning that ended. Enjoy.

Yesterday evening I got out and headed to the stock ponds. With the drought I thought there might be a lot of wildlife around the ponds and I was right. Many birds are still coming in during the spring migration. Still have not see any bullbats(nighthawks) but looking forward to their arrival.

On the way I did run into one of the most exciting things I have ever photographed. A very large and angry rattlesnake. It was about 5 foot long and about as big around as my wrist. He lunged at me twice and covered a larger distance than I thought. Good thing my 600mm lens as a minimum focusing distance of 13 feet.

I won't post any pictures on the main post but I will put a couple in the comments. So there is your warning.

I've been on the lookout for the songbirds to come to the South Plains. Beginning to see a few and but still waiting for the unnerMississippi Kites and Nighthawks to come back. While we wait there is always the chance to see quail and roadrunners. In fact my neighbor has a roadrunner nest in his front yard in a spanish broom.

I never realized that roadrunners can cover such a large area. I see the parents over a half mile away hunting for food. You can barely see the hatchlings in the nest so no photographs but there are 4. I'm hoping that we get to see them leave the nest.

Bob White and Scaled Quail are pairing off and looking for nests. I've seen numerous pairs in the milo stubble behind my house as I am getting the field ready for cotton.

I love the mornings. You never know what you will see. In these three photos that I saw something different each morning. Although we are in a drought we still see wildlife and sunrises that brighten your day. Get out and look at the sunrise and look around as you might be surprised at what you see.
