Summilux 50mm f/1.4 Asph. ! Finally!
I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally have one of these in my possession. Picking one up is no easy thing. It’s not exactly a necessary purchase either. There are many options out there that are much less expensive and frankly just as good. Personally, I already have a 50mm Summicron that is more than enough for what I want to shoot anyway. So, why would I then decide to pick something like this up? Because had it for a price I couldn’t pass up. It was marked as “ugly” and was therefore much less expensive than normal. But in my opinion it’s still really good looking. Sure there are some marks on the body of the lens, but only someone who takes photos of pillows in a perfectly controlled studio would get upset at a few small scuffs. The optics themselves are virtually perfect so I’m perfectly happy.
The Summilux 50mm f/1.4 is remarkable lens with legendary reputation. It’s sharp when stopped down and has uniquely beautiful characteristics when opened wide at f/1.4. I’ll get into more detail when I’ve shot a few more examples with it, but the bokeh is really interesting. I mean that’s what the point of this lens is. Shooting it wide open for creamy BOKEH! If you wanted a lens to capture more of the scene then you wouldn’t look at this lens. Get a Summicron or something slower for landscape work.
The problem I have with this lens is, kinda what I mentioned above, I don’t normally shoot too many portraits. I’m mainly a landscape shooter. So how useful is this gonna really be? Am I going to decide to keep it or my Summicron? I guess that’s something we’ll figure out together. What would you do?
