Summilux 50mm f/1.4 Asph. ! Finally!
I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally have one of these in my possession. Picking one up is no easy thing. It’s not exactly a necessary purchase either. There are many options out there that are much less expensive and frankly just as good. Personally, I already have a 50mm Summicron that is more than enough for what I want to shoot anyway. So, why would I then decide to pick something like this up? Because had it for a price I couldn’t pass up. It was marked as “ugly” and was therefore much less expensive than normal. But in my opinion it’s still really good looking. Sure there are some marks on the body of the lens, but only someone who takes photos of pillows in a perfectly controlled studio would get upset at a few small scuffs. The optics themselves are virtually perfect so I’m perfectly happy.

The Summilux 50mm f/1.4 is remarkable lens with legendary reputation. It’s sharp when stopped down and has uniquely beautiful characteristics when opened wide at f/1.4. I’ll get into more detail when I’ve shot a few more examples with it, but the bokeh is really interesting. I mean that’s what the point of this lens is. Shooting it wide open for creamy BOKEH! If you wanted a lens to capture more of the scene then you wouldn’t look at this lens. Get a Summicron or something slower for landscape work.

The problem I have with this lens is, kinda what I mentioned above, I don’t normally shoot too many portraits. I’m mainly a landscape shooter. So how useful is this gonna really be? Am I going to decide to keep it or my Summicron? I guess that’s something we’ll figure out together. What would you do?

Wanna see the bts video of this shot? Check out my new reel. I took my out to shoot some black and white landscapes. I haven’t had the RZ67 for too long so this is only the second roll I put through it. Pretty excited that the pics turned out as well as they did.

Self developed and scanned. I think my developer is getting weak. Gonna have to make some new developer for next time. Oh well! 😅

My current desert island set up. What would yours be?

Simple or kitted out cameras can be so exciting to work with. Everyone has their own preferences. It’s so interesting to see what others work with.

Breath. It’s beautiful out there. The fresh breeze. The smell of the light dew on the foliage. It’s nice to get lost.

I don’t know about you but I feel like time is moving by so much faster. We’re stuck inside so days pass without us realizing it. We’re paranoid of Covid-19, violent interactions with others, and generally losing our minds.

It’s tough to stay positive. To stay calm when there is so much for everyone to be frustrated at. I’m right there with you.

I hope we can get Covid under control, learn to accept each other and treat each other with respect so we can all step out and smell the fresh breeze.

Hey everyone! Wow, it’s been quite a long time hasn’t it? I really missed being active on here. What have I been doing? Lagging it to be honest. I’ve been doing some shooting, mainly for myself. My Leica’s have been my primary tools for the past few days/weeks. I’ve been working on getting some new projects going with new clients. The usual stuff. But I think it’s time to start posting again. I miss interacting with all of you. However, be ready. There’s different kinds of content coming.

See you all soon!

Test running the Contax Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 on my A7RII. This is particularly interesting combo in my eyes because most lenses for the Contax G1 & G2 had no focus ring. They were meant to be completely auto focused which makes having them adapted a bit weird. Remember, the Contax G cameras were meant to be high-class auto cameras that anyone could easily shoot. They did have some manual features but the “manual focus” method was beyond useless. It’s nails on a chalkboard bad. Anyway, I’m really glad that I can use them on my Sony with a slightly better/normal focus ring because I love the look they have! I haven’t taken many photos but you can tell they have Zeiss’ signature contrasty pop. Zeiss has always made fantastic optics and the fact that this 20ish year old lens still holds up is a testament to that.

I will say this camera+lens combo is not a perfect set up though. It is mainly because of the focus issues. It’s a set up that feels forced. That was never meant to be, because it wasn’t. As fun as seeing the results was, I expect that the 21mm will spend most of its time on my G2 where it was supposed to be in the first place.

Take advantage of good lighting! I’m in the process of rearranging my office space... again, and the light coming through the window was too good to pass up! I set my phone down to snap some pics and edited them on my iPad before posting them on here. Not too bad for some quick edits on an impromptu gear shot.

Swipe through and you can see the mess my office is right now. Snapped on the iPhone really quick too. Should be fixed and set up soon. I can’t wait!

Are there any cameras you have sold/lost that you still miss? For me it is my Pentax 67. It was a huge, heavy, and cumbersome. I didn’t take it out too often but I always enjoyed shooting it when I did. It is an oversized SLR so it was easy to shoot and the massive 6x7 negatives always came out beautiful! The 67 combined with 105mm f/2.4 rendered even the simplest shots in a way I don’t think any camera I’ve used can.

I don’t regret trading it because I ended up getting my Leica m6 which I love and use much more, but there are times when I miss lugging it around and hearing that massive mirror slap every time I took a shoot. As much as I miss it I know I wasn’t using it to it’s full potential. Sitting on a shelf gathering dust is not the place for a useful and functioning camera.

Let me know what camera/gear you miss down below.

Keep it simple. I’ve really been on a minimalist kick lately. I’ve grown to appreciate the ease of keeping my kit as small as possible. I think we can get overwhelmed with having a lot of gear or in thinking that having so much gear makes us great photographers/videographers. Honestly I think it can have the opposite effect if you aren’t careful. Thinking you have to get all this gear and lug it around can really put a damper on what you want to do. Unless you have a crew of people helping you, keeping a small kit is the way to go. Is it a bit restricting, sure. But the benefits, for solo shooters is game changing. Run & gun it, guys :)

Anyway, here’s a few slides from my recent trip to Yosemite. Developed last night.

Jumping up from a relatively microscopic sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro Max from yesterday, here we have a 100mp medium format behemoth. The Fujifilm GFX 100 has been around a little while now and I’ve talked about it before, but I still cannot get over it. Just the fact a camera like this exists for a somewhat “reasonable” price is bonkers. The mad scientists over at are probably laughing maniacally while looking at people bicker over which is a better full frame camera the Canon R5 or the Sony a7RIV for photos when they know they have the capability of putting out a real challenger. Maybe they will one day. In the meantime I’ll continue hoping and admiring the GFX 100. I don’t have anything I’d probably need 100mp for but gosh would it be great to have anyway. What would your shoot with this?
