When I sat down to talk with AJ, he told me about some of the incredible obstacles he’s had to overcome in his life. As a man with a colorful past, I wanted to draw a parallel to that by setting him on the 6th Street Bridge - a literal means for people to get over obstacles to enter and Downtown LA.

This shoot with AJ helped me reconnect with the version of myself I wasn’t nurturing and was waiting to come back out. I’ll get more into it in the days to come, but for now, here’s a few frames from that day.

It’s important in my projects that I get to know the people in front of the lens. I take the time to have in-depth conversations to hear and fully understand their stories, so I can frame them with truth and intent. It’s deliberately a slower process so I can take more personal photos that mean that much more to them.
