For many older adults, the pet waiting beside the door is family—and sometimes their most constant source of comfort. Webb County Community Action Agency has launched a Meals on Wheels Pets Program to help elderly clients feed their dogs and cats along with receiving their own meals. The program responds to a problem that is easy to miss: limited income, mobility and transportation can make buying pet food or reaching veterinary care extremely difficult. A national Meals on Wheels effort, supported by PetSmart Charities, has been working to close those gaps through food deliveries and access to services such as discounted veterinary care and grooming. A 2021 study cited by the organization found that half of surveyed clients could not access preventive, sick or emergency veterinary care. Webb County is seeking donations to sustain the local program. A bag of pet food may look like a small delivery, but it can protect a relationship, reduce isolation and spare a senior from having to choose between personal necessities and caring for a beloved companion.

Shelter teams help visitors understand an animal’s age, energy, health and behavior, then look for a household where that pet can thrive. The wider campaign brings extra attention to animals who might otherwise wait quietly while the same few faces receive online clicks. It also creates space for the next lost, surrendered or injured animal that arrives. Popcorn Park’s broader work includes adoption, sanctuary care and support for animals with nowhere else to go, so every successful match helps the entire system keep moving. For visitors, the weekend may begin as a casual stop. For one animal, it can become the day a stranger pauses long enough to ask a question, learns their story and decides the empty space at home has finally found its occupant.

Josh Collette was at Riviera Beach in San Clemente with his family when he saw two children struggling in a rip current. The 42-year-old father of five, an experienced swimmer and surfer, went straight into the water. He dove headfirst but struck a sandbar hidden by the swell, breaking two vertebrae and severely damaging his spinal cord. The children made it out safely. Josh was pulled from the water, and his wife, Rose, began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. From his ICU bed, where he cannot currently speak, Josh told his story by having Rose read his lips. He has no feeling below his shoulders, and his family is raising money to move him to a specialized spinal-cord rehabilitation facility in Colorado. Neighbors have brought meals, cared for the children and walked the family dog. Even with the long recovery ahead, Josh said he would make the same choice again. Rose calls him the family hero—and the community around them is making sure this hero does not face the next chapter alone.

Ashley Taunton was driving with her daughter through heavy rain in Rhode Island when she saw a car carrying three teenagers hydroplane. Friends created fundraising and meal-support pages to help Ashley, her husband and their children manage everyday costs while she cannot work. She saw young people in danger, stepped toward them and gave one family the chance to bring their child home.
