Just posted my first post on Substack:
Title: Life is Art
⸻
I think everything in life is art.
What you do.
How you dress.
The way you love someone, and how you talk.
Your smile and your personality.
What you believe in, and all your dreams.
The way you drink your tea.
How you decorate your home. Or party.
Your grocery list. The food you make.
How your writing looks. And the way you feel.
This is one of my favorite quotes by Helen Bonham Carter and is the initial jumping off point for this substack.
If you believe this — really believe it — then there is no such thing as a neutral moment.
There’s only art you make intentionally, and art you make by accident.
I’ve always been drawn to the people who get this without saying it.
The woman who wears silk in the kitchen at midnight.
The man who orders champagne at a dive bar because that’s what he felt like drinking.
The friend who can turn a plain notebook into a gallery simply by writing in it.
My aunt or cousin who turn rooms into places that make you feel at home and loved and you never want to leave.
It’s not about money. It’s not about “taste” in the obvious sense.
It’s about living with a certain awareness — of light, of texture, of proportion, of mood.
Over the next few months, Life is Art will be my open sketchbook.
We’ll look at photographs, paintings, rooms, and clothes — but also at gestures, rituals, and stories.
Some things will be beautiful in the traditional sense. Others will be beautiful in the way cigarette smoke curls above a marble ashtray, or how a badly hemmed skirt hits the ankle at exactly the right place.
This is not an instruction manual.
It’s an atmosphere.
One you can slip into whenever you want.
Welcome. —-
