The art world continues to move forward, and I’m delighted to have my work included in those efforts. I am now in two exhibits, both in June, that had been planned to take place live and on the galleries’ walls but has now moved to online exhibits. This has provided me with a wonderful balance to the challenges we are all facing.

First, I’m especially excited that I have won First Place in the The Los Angeles Center of Photography’s (LACP’s) Fifth Annual “The Creative Portrait” exhibition, a beautiful collection of photography juried by Paul Kopeikin, owner of the Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles for almost 30 years. He was especially interested in seeing “unique and edgy portraits,” and I’m glad that he found that in my photo.

“150 different photographers from around the world submitted for the exhibition, representing a total of 1,022 photographs. From these, the juror selected 40 images (from 32 photographers).”

The online exhibition and sale will run:
June 1 – July 15, 2020
All works will remain available afterwards as well.

(photograph - archival pigment on luster paper,
- signed on back, edition 1 of 20)

This image is censored here to accommodate to the sensibilities that some of my friends, colleagues, and followers may have, but the exhibition shows the uncensored version itself. I am most excited that the juror, Paul Kopeikin, appreciated what I saw in this image.

Then, I got this great news in my email from Peter Mays, Director of the Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA) and Gallery 825:
Congratulations! Your piece Rectangle Variations was selected for our online Gleaming Apollo exhibit, an all -media celebration of and commentary on Los Angeles as viewed by the community's local emerging artists.

The online exhibition and sale will run:
June 2 – July 15, 2020

The works will be posted online on June 2.
All works will remain available afterwards as well.

I’m thrilled to have been selected to have my photo included in the Black, White, & More exhibition, at the SE CENTER for Photography, in Greenville, South Carolina.

Juror for the exhibit was Paula Tognarelli, Executive Director and Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography, in Wi******er outside Boston, MA. She has also juried and curated many distinguished exhibitions nationally and internationally.

For this exhibit, Paula was especially interested to see the work of “photographers [who] see the world in original and fluid ways.”

If you are unable to attend the exhibit in person, you can see all of the images at https://www.sec4p.com/bw-more-ss?utm_source=SEC4P+Contacts&utm_campaign=d456289e5f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_01_18_04_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_4db474f65d-d456289e5f-137314725&mc_cid=d456289e5f&mc_eid=eedf9f5886. January is off to a great start for me, and it’s all outside of LA.

Coming up first, I’m excited to have been selected to have my photo included in the Second Annual Members Exhibition, at the PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury VT.

Abstract images combine shapes, color, pattern, texture and imagination to create an image that is largely independent of visual reality.

Juror for the exhibit was Kirsten Hoving, who is known for imaginative photographs that challenge the boundaries of the photographic medium. Her work has been displayed in exhibitions around the world, taught art history at Middlebury College for over thirty-five years, and also curated multiple exhibitions at the College museum and other venues. She has also collaborated with her daughter, photographer Emma Powell, on the highly acclaimed photographic fairy tale, “Svala’s Saga.”

In jurying this exhibit, she says,
I found myself drawn to ones that hovered between the real and the abstract, where I could guess at what I was looking at, but without being entirely sure…. While I considered the use of color and light, shape and space, texture and composition in all of the photographs, I was especially drawn to those that required a second look, ones that made me wonder how they were made or what, if anything, was being pictured.

I’m especially honored to be included in the exhibit, since only 35 images were selected for the gallery exhibit from nearly 2,000 photographs submitted. Also, this is the first time I have shown this work, which is part of my series, “Overlooked – In the Gallery.”

I’m back from Japan and the 19th Japan International Art Exchange Exhibition at The National Art Center of Tokyo, where I had 10 photos! It was a wonderful exhibit, and I am thrilled to have received two awards, the Golden Award and the Award for Excellence. Here’s the certificate and image for the Golden Award, which is the highest award given. This is extra special, because it’s the first time I’ve exhibited this image, “Self Portrait 7,” which is 30 x 21 (framed). The Award of Excellence went to “Light Switches and Arrows,” also shown here and printed on aluminum. The rest of the photos are: Car, Cowboy, & Astronaut; Circle of Chairs; Downtown LA; Green and Orange and Grey; Lines and Angles – 2; Men's Room; Modeling; and Statements - SMB - The Face Revealed – 2. All are of similar size, and some are similarly framed while others are mounted on aluminum. I’ll show you them in the exhibition in another post soon.

I am also excited to have one more of my photos on exhibit in Minneapolis. The theme of this exhibition is The Abstract Image, juried by Elizabeth Flinsch, editor of SHOTS Magazine, an independent magazine of black and white photography. This is the first time this photo has been exhibited!

“An abstract photograph draws away from that which is realistic or literal. It draws away from natural appearances and recognizable subjects in the actual world. Some people even say it departs from true meaning, existence, and reality itself. It stands apart from the concrete whole with its purpose instead depending on conceptual meaning and intrinsic form.” - John Suler

Happily, Praxis has supplied a link to the photos in the exhibit: https://www.praxisphotocenter.org/cfe-temp-gallery. Mine is the first image, and please explore the other wonderful photos. I’m honored to be included among them.
