Captain Beefheart by Guy Webster

Guy once described lead singer Don Van Vliet as “one of the greatest characters in the music industry,” and frequently reflected on how much he enjoyed working with the band to create the imagery that became central to their distinctive identity.

We are thrilled to have one of Guy Webster’s iconic portraits of The Rolling Stones included in the ForestWatch auction, which is live now!

Bid big and bid often to protect the wildlife, old growth forests, watersheds, and climate of California’s central coast.

ForestWatch protests wildlife, wilderness, water, and sustainable access throughout the Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument. They achieve this through education, advocacy, and legal action to benefit communities and our climate.

This incredible photo, signed by Guy Webster, is custom-matted and beautifully framed (21.5” x 18”). The photo was an outtake from the photoshoot for the Rolling Stones compilation album, “Big Hits” (High Tide and Green Grass) which was released in 1966. The shoot took place in Franklin Canyon in LA.

Please help support ForestWatch’s efforts to safeguard our region’s public lands by shopping this silent auction!

“Laurel Canyon is the sort of canyon where you’d expect to find a lot of motorcycles. Topanga Canyon is the sort where you’d look for horses. Both these means of transportation are popular among the music-makers who live in these canyons: bikes in Laurel, horses in Topanga. VW campers in both.” - Rolling Stone journalist Jerry Hopkins in 1968 summing some of the key differences between Laurel and Topanga canyons.

To confirm the horses in Topanga part, here’s The Byrds’ Chris Hillman, Roger McGuinn and Michael Clarke in Topanga Canyon during a photoshoot for their 1968 album, “The Notorious Byrd Brothers.”
