In the final golden moments of sunset at Mirador Barlovento high above Pradera in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, this male Andean Emerald (Uranomitra franciae) flew directly into the last light of the day.

His body glowed with rich emerald-green iridescence as subtle speckling across the throat caught the warm tones. The long slender bill led the way while his wings blurred with graceful motion against the soft, luminous forest bokeh.

With the sun dropping quickly, I raised the ISO to 6400 on the Canon R5 and let the camera select 1/500 second at f/6.7 from four meters away using the RF 100-500mm at 500mm. It gave me just enough speed to hold the head sharp while keeping the beautiful sense of movement and that magical dusk atmosphere.

These hummingbirds are vital pollinators in Colombia’s highland transition zones. Capturing this moment felt like a perfect reminder of why I’m out here documenting and protecting these wild places.

In the quiet moments just before evening at Mirador Barlovento above Pradera in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, this male Blue-headed Sapphire (Chrysuronia grayi) settled onto a slender branch and held perfectly still as the light softened around him.

His violet-blue crown caught the last warm rays while the rest of his body shifted between deep emerald and turquoise, the long coral-red bill standing out sharply against the gentle forest bokeh. There was something calm and deliberate about the way he paused, as if giving the day one final, graceful bow.

Shooting in Program mode on the Canon R5 with the RF 100-500mm at 500mm, I had already raised the ISO to 3200 as the light dropped and let the camera choose 1/350 second at f/6.7 from three meters away. The setup handled the fading conditions cleanly, preserving the subtle color shifts across his feathers without any need to disturb him.

These localized hummingbirds serve as quiet indicators of the health of Colombia’s western Andean slopes. Capturing this moment reminded me how important it is to protect the transitional habitats that still support such remarkable species.

In the golden late-afternoon light at Mirador Barlovento high above Pradera in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, I captured this male White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) in dynamic mid-flight.

The bird’s head radiates intense sapphire-blue iridescence, contrasting beautifully with a crisp white neck patch and vibrant emerald-green body. His long straight bill cuts through the air while motion-blurred wings convey power and grace against a soft forest bokeh.

Shooting in Program mode on the Canon R5 with the RF 100-500mm at 500mm, I set ISO 800 from 4 meters away, allowing the camera to select 1/250 second at f/6.7. This gave me the ideal balance of sharpness on the head and pleasing wing motion while maintaining ethical distance.

As a vital pollinator in Colombia’s Andean transitional ecosystems, the White-necked Jacobin highlights the importance of protecting these rich habitats through responsible ecotourism and conservation efforts.

High in the Andean foothills at Mirador Barlovento above Pradera in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, I photographed this male Blue-headed Sapphire (Chrysuronia grayi) in elegant profile on a vibrant green stem during soft late-afternoon light.

The bird’s head shines with deep violet-blue iridescence that flows into rich emerald-green across the back and wings. His long coral-red bill creates a striking focal point, while the dark body and subtle white undertail contrast beautifully with the creamy forest bokeh.

Using the Canon R5 and RF 100-500mm at 500mm from a respectful distance, I selected 1/350 second at f/6.7 and ISO 800 to freeze the moment cleanly while achieving pleasing subject isolation in fading light.

As an important pollinator in these transitional ecosystems, the Blue-headed Sapphire highlights the rich biodiversity of Colombia’s western Andes. Moments like this strengthen my dedication to conservation photography and responsible ecotourism.

High in the Andean foothills at the scenic overlook of Mirador Barlovento above Pradera in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, I photographed this male Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) perched in crisp profile on a slender branch.

His head and body radiate vibrant emerald-green iridescence that shifts like liquid metal in the soft natural light, while the long, vivid red bill tipped in black slices forward with striking precision. Warm rufous tail feathers add bold contrast against the soft forest bokeh.

To freeze the moment cleanly in fading late-afternoon light while maintaining beautiful subject isolation, I worked handheld at 1/250 second, f/6.7 and ISO 800 with the Canon R5 and RF 100-500mm lens at 500mm from a respectful 3.5 meters.

As an important pollinator, the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird plays a vital role in sustaining Colombia’s transitional ecosystems and shade-coffee plantations. Images like this serve as a powerful reminder of why protecting these habitats matters.

In the late-afternoon light at Mirador Barlovento high in the Andean foothills above Pradera, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, this female White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) landed on a vibrant green stem and held a perfect profile pose just long enough for the moment to come together.

Her head and back shimmer with iridescent emerald-green scales, while delicate green speckling creates a subtle mosaic across her throat and breast. A clean white belly and boldly striped tail provide striking contrast against the soft forest bokeh. With the light fading quickly and the encounter being fleeting, I had already set ISO 3200 to achieve a shutter speed of 1/1500 second. The lens was at its wide-open aperture of f/6.7, allowing me to isolate her beautifully at four meters using the RF 100-500mm at 500mm on the Canon R5.

As an important pollinator in these transitional Andean ecosystems, the White-necked Jacobin plays a vital role in maintaining the health of both wild forests and shade-coffee plantations. Capturing such images strengthens my commitment to using photography as a tool for conservation awareness and habitat protection.
