This Golden-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia chrysopasta) was photographed at Caracolí Bird House in Colombia’s Meta region, perched on a thin stem among pale seed heads with golden-yellow underparts, an olive-green back, a darker cap, and a pale bill.

The bird is small and compact, and that is part of its strength as a subject. Euphonias do not dominate a scene the way larger tanagers or toucans can. They hold a quieter place in forest-edge habitat, feeding on fruit and helping move seeds through the landscape.

Caracolí continues to show why community-managed sites in the eastern Andean foothills matter. They protect not only the obvious species, but the smaller birds that complete the picture of a living forest.

At Caracolí Bird House in Colombia’s Meta region, this Blue-gray Tanager (Thraupis episcopus) of the white-edged variant paused among the green stems, its soft blue-gray body set against bright turquoise wings marked with clean white edges.

The refined contrast between the muted gray tones and the vivid blue of the wings creates a quiet elegance that distinguishes this form from the more commonly seen birds of the same species. Working from a respectful distance with the Canon R5 and RF800mm plus 1.4x extender, I was able to hold fine feather detail even at a slow shutter speed in the soft light.

These subtle variations within familiar species continue to reward careful observation in the eastern Andean foothills and remind us of the rich diversity still present in well-protected habitats.
