Alex and Noah played the first live show I ever saw, so photographing them 15 years later in our home city of Corvallis is about as throwback as it gets. Neither they nor I live here anymore, but our paths collided last weekend at the da Vinci Days Festival and I couldn't be more grateful for having the opportunity to shoot with them. Is she outgoing? Yes. Is she vegan? Yes. What was special about Liana besides the things that are also true of half of LA? By the time lunch rolled around, it hit me: She had an unguarded, unpretentious interest in helping other people. Case in point: the two of us were talking to another woman that morning who made it clear that she had special dietary needs. Because the production company made little effort to accommodate her, she would have to simply go hungry while everyone around her ate. For Liana, this would not stand. She took apart her own meal, found everything that the woman could eat, and delivered it to her. When she realized what Liana had done, the woman burst into tears of gratitude, right there in the middle of a crowded room. Do we see things like that everyday? No, hardly ever. But what might happen if we opened our eyes, watched others, and looked for ways to help? 👀

Is photography hard? It depends on what you mean. Yes, it's easy to take a picture, but we all know it's difficult to capture the precise moment + emotion you want and do so in a way that there isn't a tree branch or fence post "growing out of" someone's head. I'm not going to make it sound like I wake up every morning and walk 9 miles uphill each way to school, but there's something occasionally infuriating about having a job that everyone thinks they can do --- and you know who else feels this way? Models! The popular conception is that to be a model, all you have to do is look good and show up. This couldn't be further from the truth. A model must dedicate themselves to learning how to pose, to spending hours at the gym, to tirelessly promoting their work in an industry that persistently undervalues them. This is why I'm so grateful when I work with a talent as kind, dedicated, and professional as Levon (). He was a total pro, and in less than an hour, we captured dozens of shots that I'm actually in love with, with no locations planned ahead of time. This is something of a miracle! Thank you, Levon, and thank you to all of the other amazing people I've been fortunate enough to meet and shoot with this year :)
