People ask me all the time where to go for family photos in LA. Finding the right location matters just as much as choosing your photographer, and it’s usually the hardest part to figure out on your own.⁠
⁠
As a family photographer working across LA, the Conejo Valley, and South Bay, I’ve spent years scouting spots so that my families don’t have to.

Some are quiet and shaded for kids who won’t sit still. Some are architectural and editorial for families who want something bolder. Some just feel like home.⁠

Some trips are just trips. And then there are the ones that remind you why you are a photographer in the first place. 🌸⁠

It started in Oregon at Adelman Peony Gardens. My favorite flower, so many of them. I could have stayed for days. I still think about going back just to create an entire peony picture book.⁠
⁠
From there, off to w**e country, need I say more? We stayed at the most photogenic little hotel, THE COMPASS MCMINNVILLE, and then spent our days completely inspired at Artist Block W**e, Ambar Estate, The Carlton W**emakers Studio, Furioso Vineyards, and Lingua Franca W**ery. Every single stop felt like a location scout I didn’t know I was taking.⁠

Then the coast called.⁠
The drive home down Highway 1 was “uno photo” every few minutes. Point Lobos, Bixby Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach, Nepenthe, Ragged Point Inn, Elephant Seal Vista Point. The ocean and the most beautiful green mountains and hills has always been my favorite photos, and the Central Coast delivered on both. 🌊⁠

The ocean is my reset button. Always has been. It’s also my favorite thing to photograph.⁠

“Lucky charm headshot.” 🍀⁠

That’s what Anna called hers, and honestly, that’s exactly what a new headshot will do for you! ⁠
⁠
She came to her headshot mini session feeling uncomfortable, which, for the record, is the most common thing I hear. More common than “I’m so excited!” More common than anything. She left with photos that were “exactly what she needed”.⁠

Her words: “Krista was warm and welcoming and directed all the posing.”⁠
⁠
That’s the whole secret, honestly. You don’t have to know what to do with your hands or how to pose. That’s literally my job. You just have to show up.⁠

20 years in business and I’m still unlearning things. Here are the ones that stung the most.⁠

Stop waiting for referrals to show up. Stop thinking your work speaks for itself. Stop hiding behind your business. And stop assuming people won’t book you once they actually know you. That last one is the one that changed everything for me.⁠

Save this if any of them hit home. And then go ask for the business.⁠

Did you know I also photograph dogs? Afterall, they are part of the family and if you are like me they are your children! Just like children, I photograph mine every year - sometimes just them, sometimes all of us.

One day someone will tell you to hire a professional photographer for your dogs and you should listen. ⁠
