This week’s journey through the high Sierra takes us to Dusy Basin. I’ve backpacked into this location many times over the years and never got conditions that yielded the images that I was looking for. However, with a little grit and perseverance, it finally happened. Often what you see here on jnstagram is the highlight reel of the best images. For every great image, there’s likely multiple failed attempts. You can’t just drive to locations like this, so proper trip planning a little luck is key to your success. Oh, and a high level of physical fitness as well. Climbing 12K foot mountain passes can be real gritty.

This weeks journey takes us to North Fork Big Pine Creek. This is one of those places that doesn’t feel real until you’re standing in it. You start in quiet forest, but within miles you’re surrounded by towering granite walls, rushing water, and a chain of unreal, turquoise-blue glacial lakes that almost glow in the sunlight.

I still remember the first time I saw Temple Crag back in 2013 in Backpacker Magazine. I couldn’t believe something like that existed in California. Back then, it felt like a hidden gem. Permits weren’t nearly as hard to get because social media hadn’t put it on everyone’s radar yet. It was actually easy to plan a trip out there.

And then there it is in person…

Temple Crag rising straight out of the basin, massive, jagged, and impossible to ignore. In the morning it softens to pink, by midday it’s blinding white, and by sunset it burns gold against the sky. The contrast between the still, glassy lakes below and the sheer vertical face above is something you don’t forget. It’s the kind of place that feels both peaceful and untamed all at once.

Eastern Sierra magic at its finest.

Today’s journey into the High Sierra leads us to Minaret Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Aside from the mosquitos, this spot has always treated me well when it comes to photography, often welcoming me with evening thunderstorms and serene, mirror-like sunrises. As an added bonus, the lakes are full of hungry trout that help keep our least favorite flying companions, mosquitoes, in check. And if you have the time, the loop over to Ediza Lake is absolutely worth the effort.

On this week’s High Sierra adventure, we head into the stunning Sabrina Basin, a place overflowing with high alpine lakes, wildflowers, and everyone’s least favorite trail companions…. mosquitoes. What looks like a peaceful escape into nature was actually an ongoing tactical war. The mosquitoes were so relentless that I spent half my trip hiding in my tent like I owed them money. When I did venture out to photograph or fish, I wore full rain gear despite the fact that there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Fashion choice? No. Survival tactic? Absolutely. Oh and fair warning, the hike into this basin is straight up soul crushing. Do yourself a favor and start training on the StairMaster now. Your legs will thank you.

High Sierra dreams. Of all the times I’ve hiked to this backcountry beauty, this is was by far the most beautiful.

It’s not about the final image, it’s about the experience. When I look back on my early photography trips, I realize how fixated I was on capturing the “perfect shot.” If I came home without it, I considered the entire trip a failure. Over time, that mindset has shifted. Now, the experience comes first. If I walk away with a strong image, that’s a bonus, but if I don’t, I still gained something meaningful by spending time immersed in nature. I think many photographers wrestle with this balance, and that pressure to produce results can easily take away from the joy of the process.

There’s nothing like watching the hoodoos glow through shifting clouds, a reminder that some places don’t just look beautiful… they feel beautiful.

Decided to casually throw myself headfirst into the lion’s den that is the HYROX Pro Singles division. Why would I do that? Because I love a challenge that makes me rethink my decisions mid-race. I want it to hurt. I want the voice in my head to say “quit.” And then I want to beat that voice. That kind of mental toughness doesn’t just show up in competition, it carries into every part of life. Excellence has always been the standard. Baseline set. Time to level up. Two images that show how the light changes as the sunrises in the Canadian Rockies. The light is constantly in motion. It begins soft and subtle, with cool blues and muted pastels gently revealing the landscape. As the sun approaches the horizon, warm tones start to creep in, pinks, oranges, and golds transforming the scene minute by minute. Shadows stretch and contract, contrast increases, and textures come alive. It’s a fleeting progression where no two moments are the same, and the beauty lies in watching the landscape slowly awaken as the light reaches its peak.
