Thank you to everyone that participated in my portrait project on my late father’s Olympus OM-1 completely manual film camera over the last couple years. He used to really be interested in taking portraits of everyone so I thought it might be fun to honor him with this first roll. I shot it on his Zuiko 200mm/f4 lens on Ilford FP4 Plus Black & White (ISO 125), and the rules were: fill the frame with the subject and only one frame per subject (36 subjects on my 36 exposure roll). Some turned out great, some not so great. Lessons I learned: avoid dappled light (especially in bright sun- the contrast is too great), and take your time with the manual focus. Shooting with film is very different than shooting on a smart phone or a digital camera where adjustments can be made after each shot but it ended up being a fun and challenging project that I may repeat in the future. It’s a good exercise to have one shot at getting it right.
