One of my favorite shots from my recent Norway trip with and one of the most challenging to capture. From the multi colored aurora, to the composition, to the clear water you can see through below.

The aurora is filled with color at different levels of the atmosphere. You might be used to the tall pinkish purple pillars extending into the sky in photos. But when the aurora is very active there is a lavender purple edge UNDER the green that can be seen with the naked eye. It looks like a bright sparkle highlighting the edge of the aurora, moving all on its own. This edge is so subtle and fleeting that it’s very difficult to capture with a camera, often ending up an overexposed light green.

This composition was on my bucket list and I was ecstatic that my camera was exposed for the one second this purple beam whipped around the mountain. And even more excited when I saw the color was captured!

Five minutes here wouldn’t solve all of my problems, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt.

One of the many long, dramatic sunsets I’ve seen in Lofoten. And in typical fashion, taken at a bus stop.

Calm, still moments in Norway bring me so much peace.

The stillness, the reflections, and the simplicity of moments like this are such a joy to capture and look back upon.

It’s another Tequila Sunrise…

It’s easier to capture sunsets over sunrises. But nothing beats the cool, still air of a sunrise in the desert. Especially with Joshua Trees posing in front of a colorful backdrop.

Some people don’t like the cool, foggy summers in San Francisco. But for me, it’s my favorite part of the Bay Area.

These shots were taken as night came and the fog swept over Mount Tamalpais. I stayed out extra late and did a night hike just to capture a few shots like this, with the calm lights poking through the veil of fog.

I’ve taken this shot before, but I could take it a million times and be blow away by it every single time.

The ironically cool summers of the Bay Area as Karl rolls in is one of my favorite parts of living in the Bay Area. Each summer I’m glued to satellites, web cams, and weather reports trying to find the best days to trek up to Mount Tam and capture images like these.
