This isn’t a quick “sit on Santa’s lap, smile, next!” kind of session.

My Private Santa Photo Sessions are designed as a little Christmas experience. Your child gets time with Santa to talk, play, explore his workshop, check the Nice List, work with toys, share a few secrets, and make a little Christmas magic together.

And that matters, especially for children who need a few minutes before deciding this bearded stranger in a red suit is someone they actually want to hang out with.

Because each family has a private appointment, we can photograph the moments that happen between the expected Santa portraits: the serious conversations, suspicious glances, laughter, whispered requests, and expressions you couldn't plan if you tried.

Family Christmas photos in Los Angeles don't have to depend on your children “cooperating” for the camera.

One of the easiest ways to get natural smiles is to stop asking children to smile.

During holiday sessions, I use activities and interaction instead. Children might play, pretend to bake cookies, cuddle with a sibling or do something silly with Mom and Dad. Those moments often produce the expressions parents want because the child is responding to what is happening rather than performing for the camera.

Santa Photos in Los Angeles for kids who are scared of Santa

Yesterday I was telling a client about my Santa Experience when she immediately said:

“Oh, my child is scared of Santa.”

And I realized something.

Maybe we ask an awful lot of kids when they meet Santa.

Think about the traditional Santa experience from a child’s perspective. You walk into an unfamiliar place. There’s a stranger with a huge white beard wearing a bright red suit. Everyone suddenly wants you to go near him, sit with him and smile for a photograph.

And you’ve known this guy for approximately 14 seconds.

That’s exactly what I wanted to avoid when I designed my Private Santa Experience in Los Angeles.

Your child doesn’t have to walk in and immediately pose with Santa. There are activities throughout the visit that give Santa and your child a chance to actually interact.

They might find their name on Santa’s Nice List, help him in his workshop, look through his magical globe, read a Christmas story, play a silly game or tell him what they’re hoping for at Christmas.

And they never have to sit on Santa’s lap.

Those activities serve another purpose: while your child is busy doing something interesting, Santa gradually stops being “that strange man in the red suit.”

He becomes the guy helping them find their name on the Nice List.

The guy with the funny game.

The guy who needs their help in his workshop.

In other words, they have a chance to get to know him.

Some children will still be cautious. Some will want Mom or Dad nearby. Some may never want to sit next to Santa at all.

That’s okay.

My goal with these private Santa photos near Glendale and Los Angeles isn’t to manufacture an instant Santa friendship.

It’s to give that friendship a chance to happen.

And if it does, I’ll be there with my camera when it happens.

Why are newborn babies wrapped for photos?

Wrapping isn't simply a photography style.

For many newborns, being gently and securely wrapped can be calming. It helps contain those startling little arm and leg movements and can give babies a snug environment while we create several different portraits.

And wrapped doesn't mean every photograph has to look the same. Wraps can be used alone, layered with textures, photographed with parents, or gradually loosened as baby settles.

Maternity photos don’t have to be just one style.

One of the things I love about studio maternity sessions is being able to create different looks within the same session. We might begin with something darker and more painterly, then change the wardrobe and lighting for portraits that feel simpler and more modern.

Partners and children can be included, too, so the final gallery can be a combination of portraits of you, you and your partner, and your growing family.

Maternity sessions are typically best around 28–34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully defined but you are still reasonably comfortable moving between poses and outfits.

Is your baby too old for newborn photos?

Newborn photography is often scheduled during the first two weeks, but babies can still have a beautiful newborn portrait session after that traditional window.

The difference is usually in the session itself. Older newborns may be more alert, stretch more, and prefer different positions. Rather than forcing a particular pose, I adjust the session around the baby in front of me.

Photos With Santa in Los Angeles: Please Stop Telling Your Kids “Santa Is Watching.” 🎅😂

If you're planning Photos With Santa in Los Angeles this holiday season, there’s one common Santa tradition that may actually make the experience harder for young children.

“Santa is watching.”

“You better be good.”

“Santa knows if you've been naughty.”

We all grew up with it. But think about what that sounds like from a young child's perspective.

For weeks, we tell them that a mysterious man they've never met is WATCHING THEM...

…and then one day we dress them up, walk them into a room and announce:

LOOK! THERE HE IS! GO SIT WITH HIM! 😂

And we're surprised when they're suspicious.

For some children, Santa is already a lot to process. The beard. The voice. The red suit. A completely unfamiliar person who somehow knows things about Christmas.

When preparing children for Santa photos, I would rather introduce Santa as someone they're going to meet, not someone who has been monitoring their behavior.

Talk about what Santa's workshop might look like. Wonder what he's working on. Think of something your child could tell him. Talk about the toys, cookies, reindeer and the North Pole.

Make Santa interesting.

Make him magical.

But maybe don't make him surveillance. 😂

Los Angeles Family Holiday Photos!

But wait. What if your family DOESN’T want to take holiday photos?

You want updated family pictures. Everyone else suddenly has somewhere very important to be. 😂

This is more common than you might think.

Maybe Dad hates having his picture taken. The teenagers would rather be anywhere else. A toddler has absolutely no interest in your plans. Or everyone starts asking, Do we really have to do this?

The good news: your family doesn't have to love having their picture taken to end up with family photographs they love.

A few things help:

• Keep expectations realistic, especially with young children.
• Don't spend the days before the session reminding everyone that they need to “behave.”
• Let teenagers have some input into what they wear.
• Don't worry about getting a perfect smile from every person in every photograph.
• Give everyone permission to relax and just be themselves.

And remember why you're doing it.

The photograph isn't only for your family today. Ten or twenty years from now, nobody is going to remember who complained about getting dressed or who didn't feel like taking pictures.

You'll just have the photograph.

What REALLY happens at a holiday photo session in Los Angeles? 🎄📸

It’s definitely more than getting everyone together for one Christmas card photo.

During a family holiday session, we create a variety of portraits: the whole family together, the kids on their own, siblings together, Mom with the kids, Dad with the kids, Mom and Dad together, and sometimes grandparents or even the family dog.
