I think every film ought to have a style or a look. The look doesn’t need to be overbearing; there is an art to subtlety & style needs to serve the story. Sometimes the look is created by the location, and then the job becomes finding nice moments and maintaining lighting consistency. But more often than not, the look is mapped out and decided in advance, dialed in on set, and fine tuned in post.
I’m a big fan of prep. Other DPs wing it. If you want me to wing it, I can, but I’d rather discuss ideas prior with the director & the other designers on the film. I like to create lighting plots. I like to know what we’re doing when we get there. Planning usually yields awesome footage, a better movie, and more takes for you and your actors.
It’s not a stiff style by any means. Changes can & will be made and I’m all for them. I’ve been a doc cameraman before & can find a frame in a second if that has to happen & have lit hundreds of sets, so I know how to adapt quickly. The prep mindset comes from knowing that you have x number of days and x number of hours each day and you hired me to grab the best possible images in that time. So I come prepared. I come knowing what we’re doing.
Here are six films I’m proud of. I’d like to add a seventh romcom, period piece, family drama, or space ship movie. Hopefully it can be yours.
