I love telling thoughtful and introspective stories…they are in fact one of my favorite types of films. Rite of Passage was one of them. We had the privilege of gathering images in a beautiful golden landscape as we watched Peter John Minto struggle through his manhood trial. My colleagues Rene Yescas and Zach Kientz helped form these images and Director Michael Krehan provided the narrative and the opportunity for us all to create. It took some time for this film to come together, but it will always remain one of my favorites.

I think every film ought to have a style or a look. The look doesn’t need to be overbearing; there is an art to subtlety & style needs to serve the story. Sometimes the look is created by the location, and then the job becomes finding nice moments and maintaining lighting consistency. But more often than not, the look is mapped out and decided in advance, dialed in on set, and fine tuned in post.

I’m a big fan of prep. Other DPs wing it. If you want me to wing it, I can, but I’d rather discuss ideas prior with the director & the other designers on the film. I like to create lighting plots. I like to know what we’re doing when we get there. Planning usually yields awesome footage, a better movie, and more takes for you and your actors.

It’s not a stiff style by any means. Changes can & will be made and I’m all for them. I’ve been a doc cameraman before & can find a frame in a second if that has to happen & have lit hundreds of sets, so I know how to adapt quickly. The prep mindset comes from knowing that you have x number of days and x number of hours each day and you hired me to grab the best possible images in that time. So I come prepared. I come knowing what we’re doing.

Here are six films I’m proud of. I’d like to add a seventh romcom, period piece, family drama, or space ship movie. Hopefully it can be yours.

Got a new computer recently, and I've been scrolling through some old footage from Rite of Passage, a film I did with Michael Krehan. Despite a whole lot of challenges, Rite was probably one of the my favorite films. Here's a still of PJ Minto just moving his hand through the golden grass before Mike called action for the final scene of the movie. A buddy of mine once said to me, "How come the shots that we don't frame always end up being the coolest ones". I don't know the answer to that question, but here's a cool shot that just got framed somewhat accidentally.

Actor friends!!!! I'm looking for some input!

If you had to have head shots taken, audition, go to an improv class, or go act on a film or commercial, would you rather travel to North Hollywood, or to downtown LA?

(Looking to set up a small photo & production studio ~ thanks in advance your input!!!:)

Recently I had the opportunity to work with Director Brian Olliver on his short film, I Am Not A Robot. I was happy with our efficient and effective lighting setup. Alexa Mini and Cooke 2x anamorphics. Hope you enjoy these few stills!
