Through the blur, I wondered if I was alone or if other parents felt the same way I did - that everything involving our children was painful in some way. The emotions, whether they were joy, sorrow, love or pride, were so deep and sharp that in the end they left you raw, exposed and yes, in pain. The human heart was not designed to beat outside the human body and yet, each child represented just that - a parent's heart bared, beating forever outside its chest.

I remember my childhood names for grasses and secret flowers. I remember where a toad may live and what time the birds awaken in the summer -- and what trees and seasons smelled like -- how people looked and walked and smelled even. The memory of odors is very rich.

Birth of Bunny
Wanted to share a little bit about this amazing birth story with you. It's also a story of how much collaborative care matters in birth.
Lexie and her husband live in Austin, Texas. They connected with Abby, their midwife, two years before the birth and decided to have a home birth with her in Los Angeles. They rented a house in Venice and drove out a month before the due date with their two beloved dogs (who I became besties with). She went into labor before her due date and we all gathered at her home when it was time. Played with the dogs, had breakfast together at the table and waited for Bunny. Well, Bunny had other plans so they had to make the decision to transfer to the hospital. It wasn't an emergency but something that required being there versus home. The midwife, doctor , midwife assistant and doula, Barrett, and I were all there with them supporting them through the unexpected plan.
We all joked because Bunny was taking her time as Lexie's mom was flying in to be there and little Bunny didn't make her appearance until grandma was there.

Sharing a sweet session in Topanga Canyon with Suly and her family.

I do love newborn sessions but there is also something about the little ones, when they are around five to six months old and when their personalities begin to blossom. You can also see clearly their bonding connection to mama (and papa too).
