My sister and I built a little floating deck for my yard to get our patio furniture up off the lawn! The first time either of us have attempted to build anything. Lots of YouTube consultation and texts to our dad and brother, who are both accomplished deck builders. We think we did okay for a first try!

Is this a serious/expensive repair? Not sure how long it’s been since it fell off and can’t find the piece anywhere. Won’t be able to get someone here for at least a few days because of Holidays. That’s what I would do, but we had bad wind from a storm last week and I think the piece is long gone. I can’t find it anywhere and don’t know how long it’s been missing for.

Looking for ideas of how to update this hallway. We just purchased this house and I think this is going to be my first project! Don’t hate me but I would like to paint the walls, doors and trim. Keeping the flooring the same. Also would update the door k***s and light fixture. I like the idea of the doors and trim being a little darker than the walls. I am open to anything!

Need a sanity check—$1275 for shingle repair. Is this standard or overpriced? The total time the roofers were working from truck unload to when they drove away took less than 25 minutes. They invoiced $1275 + tax for this work. Am I getting ripped off here?

The smallest deck legally allowed by code? It has railings. It has footings. It technically has a platform. But functionally? It’s one sneeze away from just being a staircase.
Not enough space to sit, grill, or even pause to think about life. But hey — it probably passes inspection.
What would you use this space for? Bonus points if your idea fits within 1.5 square feet.

Exposed Fascia Board on Stairs. I had a major double tier deck renovation done. I have been pretty satisfied with the work from my contractor. Thus far I came home today and noticed he built the stairs. He pitch framed each step, used facia down the side of the stringers and then used facia for the risers Per my request but now you can see the exposed ends of the fascia on the risers and I don’t think it looks great. The material is PVC so that is why the core is lighter than the material color.
Am I being too picky or was there a right way to do this?
Additionally You can see even on the top deck where the facia board is, you can see the exposed end. He said he tried to miter this material, but it was too hard. Is there another way to handle outside joints?

Having a contractor build deck without permit/inspection. Is the acceptable? I’m having a large deck being added to my already existing deck. The entire thing will be trex. I’m using a contractor I had used before and had great experience with. He said I could do the permits/inspections if I wanted, but he wouldn’t if he was me because I live far enough from the main road nobody will come snooping around. Seemed reasonable to me at the time.

Last Friday I went out after they got all the joists hung and left for the weekend and noticed some sub par work. Im a novice and knew wouldn’t pass an inspection. I brought it to his attention and he said he was already on planning on fixing it and it wouldn’t be an issue. Today he came and fixed the gaps by putting shims in them. I guess my question is this acceptable/what to expect if I continue on with them like that. Thanks!

First house - best way to smooth this wall?
Removed some hard, thick wall covering and as a result it’s left the wall looking like this. What is the best way to fill the gaps and smooth the wall, is it plastering or just filler and sanding? We only plan on painting it so it just needs to be smooth.Ideally would like to do DIY, have the time available to take the time to work on this.
