Shout out to for the “duo tone” lighting style technique!

Excerpt:
“The Apollo device, using Rabin’s words, is “the first scientifically-validated wearable technology that actively improves energy, focus and relaxation, using a novel touch therapy that signals safety to the brain.” It looks like a fitness tracking watch that can be worn on the wrist or ankle, where it sends gentle vibrations through the body, mimicking sound waves from music. The idea is to improve a user’s heart rate variability (HRV), which indicates how quickly you’re able to recover after a stressful experience. People who are chronically anxious or stressed often have low HRV, so their bodies and minds are never fully relaxing, or recovering — and they’re more likely to develop chronic depression, insomnia, cardiovascular illnesses and other ailments. With the Apollo app on your phone, you can choose from different settings like “Energy and Wake Up,” “Clear and Focused,” “Social and Open,” “Meditation and Mindfulness,” and “Sleep.”

I first heard Peter Kalmus on the Family Hour podcast (episode #403). The combination of his fierce honesty coupled with his hopeful attitude and actionable items we can all take to help save our planet, inspired me like no one else had previously done. I reached out to Peter and we met for a quick hike and photo shoot overlooking Los Angeles. He’s the real deal: a climate scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, he uses satellite data and models to study the rapidly changing Earth, focusing on biodiversity forecasting, clouds, and severe weather. He has a PhD in physics from Columbia University and a BA in physics from Harvard. He’s also a self-described “happy warrior.”

• Please follow him on twitter (where he recently vlogged about his 4-day hunger strike to bring awareness to food insecurity) and IG
• Please read/buy his book (chapters available for free on his website - www.peterkalmus.net) -linkinbio
• Please watch his documentary - Available on Amazon Prime
• Please do whatever you can to ramp up this conversation in your own circles.

Creating this photo portrait project on Climate Activists is me doing what I can with what I have. It’s something. That’s all we can do. Just do something, right?!

“As a youth, I was surrounded by people resisting environmental injustice. Whether protesting the siting of landfills or organizing to demand the right to breathe healthy air, they sought to understand how these situations originated, to develop solutions, and to imagine new urban futures,” writes Dr. Michael Mendez in his new book, “Climate Change from the Streets: How Conflict and Collaboration Strengthen the Environmental Justice Movement.”

Dr. Mendez — who grew up in low-income Latino immigrant communities of Los Angeles — is now a professor of environmental policy at UC Irvine. His experience living and working in communities confronting environmental racism and injustice, inspired him to write this book, where he tells a timely story of people, place, and power in the context of climate change and inequality. He explores the perspectives and influence low-income people of color bring to their advocacy work on climate change.

Photographed here in front of the Port of Long Beach, in the city Dr. Mendez now calls home. Much of his work focuses on helping communities clean up pollution near the port and near factories.

Dr. has dedicated his life’s work to studying the sacred value of mountains—the source of vision, water, biodiversity, play, and human connectivity for millions. Author and co-editor of five books –– including the upcoming “What Kind of Ancestor Do You Want to Be?” –– Dr. John is most proud of the inspiring work of his students at (where he’s the founding Dean of the School of Environment & Sustainability), who complete action-research projects for mountain-based organizations around the world as part of the UN Mountain Partnership through the .

John is a dear friend I ran closely with in college. I hadn’t seen him for 20 years until last week. Ironic, but beautiful, that during a time of forced human separateness, we finally reunited. We met, behind masks, at an outdoor taco joint in Thousand Oaks, California. So much has changed for both of us and the world where we live, but it felt like I’d seen him yesterday.

I’m so proud of my friend for all he’s doing to help humanity and I’m honored show and tell you about people doing good in the world today. In a time when we hear mostly negative news meant to prey on our fear response, it’s more important than ever to shine a light on those unwilling to give into the darkness. Dr. John is a leading example of just that.

You can learn more about him in his profile by and at his website jhausdoerffer.com/ (link in my bio).

We made these quick portraits in a parking lot, wearing masks aside from the few minutes of actually shooting, using a 135mm lens that puts 6-plus feet between me and subjects.

“If I can work daily towards a greater sense of limitless then I'll feel accomplished as a human trying to create...whether it's in front of a camera, behind, on a stage, or making music. Don't know much, and don't pretend to...but thirsty for it all.”

We didn’t know any of these amazing people other than .rebecca who invited us to a Friendsgiving party hosted by a few weeks ago. So and I decided to make some party portraits and get to know everyone. I could write long posts about each of these amazing people—most who are in LA to pursue their passions of directing, writing, camera operating, acting, producing—and are also kind, welcoming, and obviously not camera shy! Maya’s pre-dinner toast touched on her early experience in LA being a bit disconnected and isolated from friends. She was elated to be able to bring everyone together in her new house to enjoy friendship and connection that evening. Her words really echoed my feelings of attempting to create and maintain friendships in such a sprawling, car-centric city the past 5 years, but especially this last year. Trying to hack the system and not pay crazy LA rent and have more nature in our lives, Sarah and I moved to the Santa Monica mountains full-time a year ago. But we’ve decided that even the most beautiful nature and clean air can’t replace enjoying intimate friendships on a regular basis. For this reason, and some career aspirations, we’ve decided to move back to LA in the next few months! We look forward to seeing all the amazing humans we know way more often. Lastly, if you’re feeling isolated or lonely, wherever you may be, use that phone in your hands to call someone you miss. I’m sure they would love to hear from you! *And so concludes the longest post I’ve ever written. @ Silver Lake, Los Angeles

Who already misses Friendsgiving 2019?! Aside from .rebecca , we didn’t know any of these amazing people until hosted an FG party. and I were invited and happened to have the camera gear in the car and made this collection of party portraits. I could write loooong posts about each of these amazing people — writers directors DPs producers scientists actors and just the sweetest kindest souls. Maya opened her toast at dinner talking about how lonely and disconnected one can feel in cities like Los Angeles and she was so excited to be able to host friends at her new house to invite in friendship and connection with each other. Her words resonated close to home. My last 5 years living in LA has made me realize how crucial community and friends are to Sarah and me. This evening drove the point home clearer than ever. And it’s for that reason that we’re moving back to the city from our beautiful mountain outpost next month! And if you’re out there and feeling lonely or disconnected, reach out! Don’t stay isolated. Use that phone in your hand to actually call someone. They could probably use a chat too.

— composed, beautiful, powerful, living with MS since 2017. Thank you to all of the brave souls who stood before my camera for this year’s MS campaign. “Inspiring” gets thrown around too much, but that’s truly what you are to me. Thank you for the opportunity to capture your true essence and courage. @ Cherry Soda Studios
