I've been rethinking what fall family photos need to look like this year.

Usually, "fall photos" mean one thing: a field, a plaid outfit, and everyone standing in a row smiling at the camera. And listen, fields with glowy sunlight are wonderful. But they're not the only way to capture this season.

Here's what I’m thinking instead: an in-home fall session. Carving pumpkins at your own kitchen table. Being cozy together on the couch. Kids running around the backyard swingset with fall color in the trees behind them. All the things your family is already going to do this season, just with someone there to actually capture it.
No fighting for a parking spot. No corralling everyone to sit still in a field. Just your family, doing what you already do, at a location that already feels like home (because it is 😉)

One more thing while I have you: if fall photos are on your radar, don't wait until fall actually arrives to reach out. My calendar fills up fast this time of year, and I'd hate for you to end up waiting until winter (or worse, rescheduling through a snowstorm into spring, which has genuinely happened)

I didn’t plan this. It just happened.

Between Matthew’s newborn session, his six month photos, and his cake smash, I was so focused on documenting him, on capturing every stage of this first year before it disappeared, that I almost didn’t notice something else happening right alongside it: Henry is growing up too.

Every single session, I look back now and I can’t believe how much he’s changed. The way he holds his brother. The way he’s grown into a little kid with his own big personality, even though I keep expecting him to still be a toddler. Matthew was supposed to be the star of the show through every one of these sessions, and he was, but Henry ended up quietly stealing just as much of the story.

I never set out to do a Year of Life Collection for my own family. I was just trying to keep up with documenting my youngest. But looking at all of it together now, that’s exactly what we ended up with, and I am so glad we have it.

This is exactly why I love offering this to my clients. You don’t always know in the moment how much you’re going to want this later. Sometimes you just have to start, and let the story tell itself.

I've been photographing this family for four years now, and sessions like this one are exactly why I love what I do!

There's something about photographing people you already know that just feels comfortable. Just friends spending a morning together, and it happens to include a camera.

We spent most of our time in their bedroom, where the light was streaming in through the window, and played and snuggled and laughed. On their questionnaire, they mentioned how much they love playing dress up together, something they do all the time and wanted to remember, so of course we made room for that too. We ended the morning outside, running around the playset and chasing their goats around the yard (yes, it was as fun as it sounds 😉)

This is what an in-home session actually feels like. Comfortable. Fun. Completely, unmistakably you.

"Do I need a full session, or would a mini work?" I get asked this question all the time! So I wrote the full breakdown ☺️

Quick version: a mini session is 5 to 10 minutes, in-studio, and includes 3 edited images, perfect for a fast portrait update or holiday cards. A full session is unlimited time in your home, full wardrobe planning, and a complete custom gallery, the better fit for milestones or any time you want your whole story told.

Neither one is the "better" choice. It's just about being honest with yourself about what you actually need right now.

Curious what an in-home newborn session with me actually looks like? Here’s the whole thing, start to finish.

We start with a questionnaire so I can get to know your family, then a planning call to talk through your vision, wardrobe, and which rooms we’ll use. Getting your home ready is simple: move anything you don’t want photographed, open the curtains, and that’s genuinely enough. We can straighten a few things when I arrive, but the rest of your house can absolutely still look like a baby just moved in. That’s expected, and it’s okay.

On session day, we move at your baby’s pace, not a clock. Feeds, diaper changes, time to settle against your chest, all of it is part of the process, not an interruption to it. Afterward, you’ll look through your full gallery and choose the images that become a beautifully custom album, the kind you’ll actually sit down and look through with your baby one day.

This is what I love most about this work: capturing those very first days as a new family, right in the home you’re building your life in.

Here’s a little secret about what I’m actually looking for in your home: I want the light that you might typically think is a little TOO much.

Streaming, pouring, dancing across your floor kind of light. If you’ve ever caught a window in your house doing that and thought “wow,” that’s exactly the spot I want to shoot in. It’s dramatic, it’s beautiful, and it photographs unlike anything else.

The good news? You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Before every session, I ask for a quick video walkthrough of your home so I can scope out that light myself. We’ll talk through exactly where we’re shooting on our planning call, so by session day, there’s zero guessing involved.

I delivered this family's newborn gallery and got this message back:

I read this one twice, and it almost made me cry right there in the kitchen 🥹 SUCH a sweet message.

I get this question all the time: "Do we HAVE to do newborn photos in the first two weeks?"
Short answer: no.

I recommend 7 to 14 days because baby's still extra sleepy and bendy, and it's usually before any baby acne shows up. It just makes for some of those classic, curled-up newborn shots. But that's a preference, not a rule. Beautiful newborn photos are absolutely achievable anywhere within that first month.

Here's what actually matters more to me than a strict timeline: how you're doing. A rested, adjusted mom and dad will always photograph better than exhausted ones running on fumes. If it takes you a little longer to feel ready to have someone in your home with a camera, take that time. I promise it's worth it.

Oh my goodness! This newborn session 😍 Honestly, one of the most beautiful mornings I've had in a while.

This little girl is surrounded by love and you can absolutely see it.

The light in the master bedroom was just unreal the morning of their session, so we ended up staying in there most of the time, just soaking it in. But we definitely snuck into the nursery for a few shots too. (Months of getting it ready, and now there's finally a baby in it!)

But here's my favorite part. After weeks of messaging back and forth planning this session, and then spending the whole morning together, this family felt less like clients and more like friends.

That's genuinely my favorite thing about this job. Getting to meet other moms right in the middle of the same stage of life as me, swapping stories, giving advice, just being someone who gets it when things are hard. It's such a gift, honestly. (Actually, it’s the whole reason I started the monthly mama meetups. But maybe more on that another time 😉)

So glad I got to meet this sweet little family and document their first sleepy days together 🤍
