Rev. Jesse Jackson speaks on the steps of Louisville Metro Hall on June 6, 2020 following the death of Breonna Taylor.

Jackson, a civil rights activist and a protege of Martin Luther King Jr., died today at the age of 84.

Jackson visited several protest in Louisville during the height of demonstrations after the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Jackson was among the most influential civil rights leaders of his time, marching alongside Dr. King before his assassination in 1968. Jackson’s 1988 presidential run opened doors for scores of Black Democrats and provided building blocks for future campaigns, proving that white Americans were willing to vote for Black candidates.

Jackson’s activism propelled the Civil Rights Movement after the death of Dr. King, and helped paved the way for the 2008 presidential election of Barack Obama.

Nick Shirley, a self-described “independent YouTube journalist,” engages with protestors outside of the Broadview ICE Detention Center near Chicago, IL. alongside fellow conservative influencer Cameron Higby during continued demonstrations outside the facility on Oct. 10, 2025.

Shirley gained national attention in December following the release of a 42-minute video alleging social services fraud in Minneapolis Somali daycare centers. The video has since triggered a larger immigration crackdown on Minneapolis by the Trump administration. Protest against ICE operations intensified last week following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good.

Higby is now a member of the Pentagon press corps, sitting at the former Washington Post desk following a mass walkout by news agencies after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth released new rules requiring pre-approval before publishing information.

Buck Reed and Aaron Hardy of Maysville, Ky. are the sole operators of one of the last newspaper printing presses in the region. Within the mechanical rhythm of the press, Reed and Hardy find a refuge from their own internal struggles.

Newspaper printing is quickly becoming a lost trade as closures accelerate across the country. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced Jan. 7 that it would cease all operations by May, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rolled its final edition off of the press last year, although it will continue its digital news service.

Major closures have accelerated local news deserts at a time when journalism has become increasingly attacked, exposing communities to disinformation.

The newspaper press, and the local newsroom, have largely become a fading memory.

BROADVIEW, IL. — Demonstrations continued Friday outside the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility after a federal judge temporarily blocked the National Guard from being deployed in Illinois.

Broadview, 12 miles west of downtown Chicago, drew national attention following intense clashes between protestors and agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Protest began in response to claims of inhumane conditions for ICE detainees following the Trump administration’s mass immigration crackdown earlier this year.

Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth were denied access to the facility earlier today. Durbin noted this was the first time he had been denied access in 19 years.

The Trump Administration is appealing the courts decision, claiming that the deployment was necessary for protection of federal agents. A large fence was placed around the perimeter of the facility earlier this week before another federal judge ordered for it to be dismantled following complaints from local officials. The fence is expected to come down by Tuesday.

Illinois State Troopers and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office assisted federal agents in guarding the facility from protestors.
