For the second year in a row, I have the honor of making tintypes with attendees and living historians at . Join us June 20 for the Second Annual Freedom Day, commemorating the Independence Day celebration organized by African American soldiers and refugees at Camp Nelson on July 4, 1865. Today, the park is the southern terminus of the Brigadier General Charles Young Memorial Historical Corridor will feature an exhibit in his honor created by Trina Michelle Robinson.

Back in 2019 I was making tintypes in my backyard and at festivals. Deva, Amelia, and Pearl brought their 7-year-old tintype back to the studio to make an update on Mother’s Day weekend. It feels so special to make keepsakes and commemorate big moments with families and friends alike. Here’s a new 5x7, where Deva holds their first tintype I made. Check out that detail! This was actually something people often did in the 19th century- they’d bring photos from the past - or of people no longer present - to be part of the portrait. This is nearly my 4000th plate, y’all!!
