Have you ever noticed the F. Wolkow & Sons building at 20th & Magazine St. in West Louisville? Growing up, I always wondered what this building was. I did some research and apparently it was a company founded in 1894, that was most famous for producing "Kentucky Maid" straightening combs, which became essential tools in the Black beauty market. These durable tools were designed to cater specifically to Black women seeking pressed, straight hairstyles.

I can remember my mother putting hot combs on the stove top to do my sisters hair. This place may very well have been where those combs came from.

This comb was very popular, but also very unsafe--the company paid more than $6.5 million dollars in lawsuits for failing to adequately warn users about the dangers of applying a hot comb to their hair and scalp.

Amazingly the company only closed this year after it's long time owner died in May.
