The Portal. I really enjoy using this slow orthochromatic film from PolyFilm. It exercises a different photographic muscle to find the right light setting and incorporate that with a high contrast subject. The midday sun is perfect for exploring Eastern Cemetery. Hydrangea Study at Cave Hill Cemetery. I have taken a detour from my printing to show you a new handmade film by , Igor Poliakov. He is creating orthochromatic film, 25 iso, in his country of Ukraine. He invited me to try this film with pinhole photography. This film is only useful, at least for pinhole, in the harshest of lighting conditions. If you have ever used orthochromatic film, then you know of its peculiarities. In is insensitive to red light, which makes shadows deepen and skies become white and pasty. In certain situations it would seem like an unlikely candidate for success. But for pinhole photography, the esthetic adds to tge dreamy quality. If it weren’t for the extreme reciprocity failure, it could be useful in other lighting conditions. Branches Leaning. I have been on a hiatus from shooting film and getting back to the darkroom lately. I will try to put newer content as I get outside again. Here is another image from Santa Fe.

Waterfront Ember. While walking on the banks of the Falls of Ohio, I found this scene during a time of low water. Like , Al Gorman, I find many interesting items that get stranded. Lately, huge trees have been deposited on shore. This branch was used for firewood (which in and of itself seems like a dangerous activity). I have not seen Al on my trips to the falls, but I do see and appreciate the artwork he occasionally leaves behind!

Post Marked. I find telephone poles and utility poles to be an integral part of the landscape. You could call it visual pollution, or some degradation of progress, but how the wires outline the terrain has always fascinated me. It breaks up what could be an otherwise bucolic or monotonous scene. You either make lemons or squeeze out a little lemonade.

Trouble Winds. I am not sure how to print this one. The negative becomes thin in the upper left hand corner, making it difficult to print. I’m concerned that it might overpower the activity in front when enlarged. I will start small and see what happens.

Curly Cues-pinhole scene and view camera scene. I took two versions of this image. One with a and the other with a view camera. I haven’t taken out the view camera since I started pinhole photography 10 years ago. Challenging as it was, I enjoyed my first time, long time experience. I can’t say that the focus was tack sharp, because I was distracted by all the fiddling with k***s. Still, it got my creative juices flowing. If I’m being honest, I prefer the look of for now.

Garden Study. I have taken this image with many cameras. The light is soft and one can capture a lot of detail in the background. This time, I chose to test my father’s Graflex 35 camera. I cleaned it up and got the slow speeds to work consistently. Using this camera is a sentimental experience. It amazes me that this simple little camera took a lot of our vacation and birthday pictures back in the day. The weekend slide shows of the places we’d been was the icing on the cake. Sometimes the old things become the best tools.
