SHORT-EARED OWL (𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘰 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘶𝘴)

Owls are captivating. They are mysterious, beautiful, and elusive. They are also, of course, mostly nocturnal, which makes things more than a little difficult for photographers. Short-eared owls offer a tantalizing opportunity to capture images because they begin hunting before the sun sets, in the last hour or so of golden light. On this cold and clear winter evening, we scanned the horizon over the rolling grassy fields, enjoying the quiet moments as the sun dropped lower. It is always a thrill to spot the silent, slow beats of a short-eared owl’s long wings as it flies low scanning for rodents, periodically diving on voles and mice. As I look at this image, the brief moment of connection when she turned to look directly at me is still fresh in my mind and still quickens my pulse. It takes a bit of luck to be in the right place for a photo, but when one comes close it makes for a rare and memorable wildlife encounter.

Eight greats (egrets, that is). There were 36 in this shrinking pond the other day, taking advantage of their prey getting concentrated in a smaller and smaller area as the water dries up.

October's image from my 2022 Wildlife Photo Calendar

GLOSSY IBIS (𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴)

Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge was a sea of white - thousands of egrets, ibis, white pelicans, and wood storks had congregated there the previous night. The local birders said it was something that happens only a few times a year, and on this particular morning I just happened to get lucky. It was overwhelming to watch, a cacophony of birds greeting the new day and jockeying for the best positions to forage for breakfast. By 10:00 a.m. they were gone, dispersed into the endless river of grass that is the Everglades. The spectacle was over, and was not repeated the next day - the why and when of their mass gathering just one of the mysteries of avian behavior. This glossy ibis remained, quietly probing the pools, now calm and nearly silent, his graceful shape reflecting in the shallow water as I reflected on the incredible experience.

Our hummingbirds appear to have headed south, but the bees cleaned up after them. They drained a full bottle of nectar in a day.

It was very egret-y at Caperton Swamp yesterday. Pond drying up / easy pickin's as the fish get concentrated in shallow water. There were actually 7 more out of the frame.

Fun with the backyard hummingbirds as they get ready for their long migration. These are at 1/2500th second shutter speed - wings are still blurred!
