Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! And a special thank you to all the strong women in my life. This image of two adult red fox vixens (females) means a lot to me on this day. (And yes, these are red foxes but born with a genetic color morph that gave them their silver and black fur). Of course, this image is not an award winner, but the story behind the image makes me think fondly of two very strong ladies who helped raise me along the way…

I was fortunate to spend a considerable amount of time at this den, and also at a second nearby den. What I learned was that a vividly bright male red fox (not seen here) seemed to have fathered multiple litters in the area. The male fox only came around every few days to play with the kits (and to steal a little food if he was hungry). So, rather than depending on the male, these two fox vixens decided to combine dens and seemed to be raising their young kits together as a team. It was impossible to determine which kit belonged to which vixen – and the second adult vixen could possibly have been a sister or an older daughter. But either way, what was evident was that these females were dedicated to raising a happy and well-fed family of young fox kits.

As for this photo, the vixen at the center of this image seemed to be the dominate fox and had just returned with a meal to feed the family. However, before dinner began, this female was greeted and groomed by her fellow adult and kissed by one of the kits. I’m pretty sure this was a good ‘ol “Thanks, Mom!” kind of moment.

With that… I want to say thanks to the ladies who know who they are for doing all you did to make sure we were happy and supported! Happy Mother’s Day and hugs from afar! 🤗🤗

Big bull coming through - and wow was this alpha male bison the one in charge! We just returned home from our time in Yellowstone and the Tetons. It was great to visit with photographer friends and to meet new ones too. There are lots of images to go through, but in the meantime, I thought I would share a bison leading the herd through the deep snow of a previous year’s trip.

I also want to share a personal remembrance of our dear Tom (uncle, brother, cousin, dad) who left us this past week. We were in Yellowstone when receiving the news. Tom was such a wonderful person to be around who brought laughter and joy to all he encountered. Tom, you will always be remembered and you will continue to bring smiles to our faces. Thank you for being you, Tom. Rest in peace.

Taking a page out of this lioness’s book. She found the perfect (if slightly uncomfortable looking) spot for a long rest in Northern Kenya, and honestly, I’ve been doing the same with my social media lately.

Sometimes you just have to look up, shake off the nap, and get moving again. I’ve been deep in the logistics of our upcoming tours, and I’m so energized for what 2026 has in store for us and our guests.

As for this lioness, she might not have chosen the most majestic tree, but the way she rested her chin and looked right through the lens made it one of many favorite quiet moments from that trip. More to come soon.

Meet Kong, a true giant among even the largest of brown bears. Although he’s not chubby enough, nor a bear of , he is without a doubt one of the largest bears in stature I have ever been lucky enough to encounter.

For background, my group had been photographing another large male we affectionately named Arnold (after Arnold Schwarzenegger of course). At the time we thought Arnold was beyond impressive! He had a unique fishing style of flexing his pecs to let the sockeye salmon bounce right off his chest. Arnold was certainly a big bear and so much to fun to watch.

Then, out of nowhere, Kong emerged. He was so massive he almost seemed to dwarf Arnold. It's tough to convey his sheer scale on a mobile screen, but it was an unforgettable moment to see Kong stroll by. That said, Kong was a gentle giant. He was big enough not to be bothered by other bears and also did not seem to have a scar on him. He fished where he wanted to fish and then went about his seemingly content way.

Here’s to a happy and to all the big bears out there fattening up before this year’s hibernation!

An Ode to Otis

Thinking of , my mind wanders back to this incredible bear, Otis. This photo may not be an award winner, but it's a priceless memory from a trip to Brooks Falls in 2017. It was an honor to share that trip with my late wife, Marybeth. She had such a profound love for all bears, and I know she would have been Fat Bear Week's biggest champion 🐻

Life’s journey since then has led me to places I never imagined, and I've met people who have profoundly changed my life. I’m so grateful for the past, present, and future. I know Marybeth would be delighted to know that I’ve continued to capture the wild, and she would be even more thrilled that I am now blessed to be sharing this journey with my love and fellow photographer, .the.sun_

Here's to Otis, to the ones we love and miss, and to the wild moments ahead.

A happy bear for a happy new year!

Today seems like a great day to share a favorite Alaskan fishing bear moment. This brown bear seemed to float above the shallow water in pursuit of a salmon - and right at us to boot! However, beyond the image, this female bear was happy as a clam fishing along the coast and provided a magical evening that goes beyond the photos.

Here is to a happy new year and to incredible photos and adventures ahead for all!

Queen of the Mountain…

Fresh off our Big Cats & Big Tuskers safari in Southern , it is near impossible to recall all the amazing wildlife encounters experienced over our nine-day adventure. And what made the safari even more special was being able to share such incredible wildlife moments with our fantastic guests!

Of course, due to the abundance of wildlife moments photographed on safari this year, it might take me months to go through my photos. But in the spirit of sharing one of Kenya’s beautiful big cats, I thought of this lovely I was fortunate to spend time with a few years back on a previous safari.

The icing on the cake was the full moon setting behind her as she surveyed her kingdom bathed in the golden morning light. Each morning on an African safari is unique and you never know what Kenya will bless you with.

Here is to many more breathtaking African mornings ahead.

Who’s that?

… Yep, its me, I’m back 😀

It’s been a wonderful 2024, but now (after too long) it is time to get back on social media and dive fully back into my wildlife photography & tours.

This bear mom on the look out for the strange looking photographers in the small boat was quite a special moment to be able to share with guests while staying at the delightful . Our time at Snug Harbor really is a special experience that provides truly remote and breathtaking Alaskan backdrops for amazingly authentic brown bear encounters like this one.

And please keep an eye out for on-the-ground posts and stories as we are currently in Kenya about to kick off our Big Cats & Big Tuskers safari. We can’t wait to share the big cats of the Mara and the last of the giant elephants (big tuskers) in Amboseli with our guests over the next two weeks …and with everyone here on instagram!
