Don’t waste that buttermilk!
Buttermilk is one of those old-fashioned staples that does so much more than people realize. If you’re keeping a from-scratch kitchen, this is liquid gold 🤍
Here’s what you can do with buttermilk:
🥞 Baking – Makes the fluffiest pancakes, biscuits, cornbread, waffles, and quick breads
🍗 Marinade – Perfect for soaking chicken to make it tender and flavorful
🧈 Butter making – Save the leftover buttermilk after churning butter
🥗 Dressings & dips – Ranch, coleslaw, creamy dressings, and veggie dips
🍞 Sourdough & yeast breads – Adds softness and a slight tang
🧀 Homemade cheese – Great for simple farmer’s cheese or ricotta-style recipes
🥛 Buttermilk substitute – Freeze it in cubes for baking later
🌱 Garden use – Diluted buttermilk can be used to encourage beneficial bacteria in compost
And the best part?
You can make buttermilk at home with just milk + acid (or by making butter), keeping your kitchen simple, frugal, and intentional 🌿
This is homestead living—using every drop and letting nothing go to waste 🤍
