MEDIEVAL. The original gates of the castle, which are currently preserved away from the elements, were once thought to be from the 13th century.

However, dendrochronology has dated them to no later than the 1190s, making them the oldest castle doors in Europe.

Perched on a ridge above the River Wye is Chepstow Castle, the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain.

Construction starting in 1067, the castle underwent numerous additions over the centuries. As its military significance declined, it was transformed into domestic accommodation and repurposed for various other uses.
