Iglesia de las Nieves, Location: Carrera 7 and Calle 20
Author: Juan Bautista Arnaud - Arturo Jaramillo Co**ha / Built: 1922 - 1937

This is the fourth church built on this site. The first was a thatched chapel erected around 1568 and consecrated in 1585 by Archbishop Fray Luis Zapata Cardenas, thus establishing the parish of Our Lady of the Snows. In 1596 a fire destroyed it and the image of the virgin Mary, to whom the temple was consecrated. The second church was built in 1597 and then enlarged in mid-seventeenth century. Paintings and photographs that show its colonial and austere [structure] are rare. However, that church was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1917, and it was demolished in 1922. In its place Juan Bautista Arnaud and Arturo Jaramillo designed and constructed the current church which is inspired by the Romanesque-Byzantine styles consistent with the prevailing architectural eclecticism in Bogota at the time.

Today's post is a dramatic photograph of the
volcanic cone of Nevada del Ruiz taken somewhere in
the 1950s from an adjacent slope.

This is an opportunity to correct an omission in
the Berlin Exhibit, where we presented certified
copies of the PRINTS Daniel had donated to his son
Carlos. This digital file was scanned from a
negative in the same photo-shoot, one that Daniel
gave away, lost, or didn't print.

That makes this photograph very rare indeed.
