Hidden Freedom Photography

Hidden Freedom Photography Photography bringing you hidden freedoms of wild places I looked up definitions for some of the adjectives he used as I thought they seemed unusual.

I love these quotes by Theodore Roosevelt from his writings about the area, "The farther one gets into the wilderness, the greater is the attraction of its lonely freedom." and "There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness, that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy, and its charm." For example why describe the freedom as "lonely"? Well the second definition of lonely when

describing a place is "• (of a place) unfrequented and remote: 'a lonely stretch of country lane.' " Now it makes sense! Our society these days just doesn't really use the word "lonely" in that context. I decided to choose "Hidden Freedom" as a way to combine these 2 quotes because I think it describes the park and the horses perfectly. TRNP is where I got my start, and though my photography will not always consist of photos just from there as it does now, I always want to see the title and remember to go back to my roots. I also want to bring the Hidden Freedom's of other public lands and wild places to my viewers. Thank you for all of your support so far! I enjoy being able to share my photos with you.

Keep being loud 💕

We’re live in Dickinson, North Dakota!

The Theodore Roosevelt wild horses are integral to the scenery, native wildlife, and wilderness qualities of the park – the landscape that inspired President Theodore Roosevelt and still inspires visitors from all over the world today. The park is currently home to just 180 wild horses, but the National Park Service (NPS) is considering removal plans that could significantly reduce the herd’s population to an unsustainable 35 to 60 horses, or even eliminate the herd entirely. We cannot allow this to happen.

That’s why we’ve set up billboards outside of the park in the town of Dickinson so we can keep the pressure on park officials as they gather their environmental assessment for the final decision regarding the fate of the wild horses.

Thank you to Wild at Heart Images-Wildlife and Nature Photography for image use and Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocatesfor all of your help!

Enjoyed a trip to TRNP almost a couple weeks ago. Despite the snow, I was able to hike some and find more horses than I expected I would. I found more that aren’t pictured here. I will try to add them in the near future. Most everyone looked like they were doing well, but the horses getting up in age were showing it as they are the most lean coming out of winter.

A great horse rescue in SD needs our help!

Can we talk bluntly for a moment?

These two lovely babies, Belle and Archie, are very sick right now. It's likely a virus, a flu/rhino, which is pretty common in horses. It's one of the things we vaccinate for, but unvaccinated horses and young horses can get it. A couple other Kingsbury horses who have an unknown vaccination history also showed symptoms, but they are older and healthier and it doesn't hit them as hard.

Neither of these babies have an appetite and both have lost a massive amount of weight. Belle is so weak she struggles to get up on her own and we are having to assist her. Yesterday was a hard day. After struggling to get her up for nearly an hour, and with all the other stressors, I had a pretty big meltdown.

You see, we owe the vet a lot of money still from last year's huge seizure and all the various things that happened including baby Archie's week long stay in ICU. Because of that, we're doing our best to consult via phone or deal with minor things without incurring more vet expenses. We've paid off nearly $5000 of that bill already this spring ... but still owe over $5000.

And so, when Belle and Archie showed snotty noses and weight loss, we brought them up and put them in quarantine, offered any food they want, and gave it time. Yesterday it became obvious they needed to go in and be sure it was simply the flu and get them checked over to rule out any other issues - because even though their symptoms are gone they are still not really eating.

And that, Gentle Spirits, caused me to have a massive meltdown. Because I NEEDED the vet and I am so scared we won't be able to pay them that I was absolutely crippled by helplessness and shame.

Guys, we can't feel that way. If a horse needs the vet, we need to feel comfortable taking them. And our vets are amazing - they have never once made a big deal about our bill nor denied us service. But with everything uncertain, not being able to hold meet & greets and our spring spaghetti dinner fundraiser, and losing some key monthly sponsors ... well my annual meltdown and panic got to me. It's bad enough to have such very sick babies causing stress.

I need your help. WE need your help. We absolutely need to get that monstrosity of a vet bill off our shoulders so we can move on and focus on more important things like how we're going to facilitate adoptions and volunteer training while social distancing and being able to bring fun things like baby Riley pictures to you.

Two weeks from now is ... a grass roots campaign to try and help non-profits during these crazy times. Because we're still here, we're still doing everything we can ... and we're absolutely stuck because of the virus.

You've done it before, and I'm hoping you can do it again. Even $10 helps. GoFundMe has launched their charity platform and have a $1000 matching funds program for . Can we do our best to earn that and make another large dent in our vet bill?

If you want to help, but prefer to mail your donation in, the address is 29571 419th Ave, Scotland, SD 57059 OR you can call Dakota Large Animal Clinic directly at 605.338.5558. If you do call them, please let us know, as they don't tell us who made the payment on our statements and then we can't thank you appropriately.

You all know I keep it positive and fun as much as I can, but right now, I'm throwing out a serious call for help.

PS - Belle and Archie did make the long trip to the vet yesterday, and bloodwork confirmed it's viral. However because they are flirting with pneumonia and still not eating well, they started them on SMZ antibiotics, and we're giving them banamine to encourage eating and Gastroguard to protect their stomachs. They have to eat - Belle's liver shows that her body is eating muscle for energy. They have unlimited food in front of them - grass hay, alfalfa, different kinds of fed - but just nibble, much like we do when we don't feel well. They just are smaller and don't have excess weight to lose being babies.

Want a chance to own one of my prints AND help out a great horse rescue in SD? Check out the online auction going on with Gentle Spirit Horses Rescue. Lots of other great items too!

If you remember c**t Arizona (now know as Ash) from a few years back, he was injured in the park and this rescue stepped in and was able to get him the care he needed to be a sound, healthy, happy partner for his new owner! The horse in this photo is actually his sire, Mystery. GSH is also home to Arden (FKA Nevada in the park).

Consider voting for Gentle Spirit Horse rescue! They are a great non profit and rescue mustangs as well as domestics. You might remember that they helped 2015 c**t Arizona a couple years ago as he had a bad injury and it was feared he could be lame. He has now made a full recovery and is being trained under saddle by his adoptive owner! Love this group.

We made it into the preliminary round of the First National Bank tournament! That means it's time to vote to move us forward for the chance to win up to $4000!

Vote here: https://loom.ly/3ifsxmg

We are pitted against a much larger group this first round - they have nearly 3 times as many Facebook followers than us! But we are mighty ... right? Vote, share, and let's see if we can move on!

Note: voting is unlimited, and you do not have to select someone in every match. You can select us and click next until the submit button and be good! But there are many good organizations out there worth learning about ... check them out!

After the last roundup, this little filly needed emergency care. In order to not repeat what happened with filly Florida a couple years ago, this rescue stepped in and saved her life! Happy ending for all!

I came across this photo again recently and it reminded me of the fun times had in the park with my friends This Mustang Life and Deb Lee Carson Photography. These two ladies are doing big things and working on not just 1, but TWO documentaries. They are currently in Mongolia to document a rider in The Gobi Desert Cup. The race starts soon, so be sure to follow along!

See that little filly there? She is now 3 years old and just got a new home with a sweet owner. That owner requested this print from me since this is also a 3 generation photo. I put a new edit on it and I’m in love! Can’t beat the lighting.
