“She’s my everything.”
That’s how 14-year-old Rosie describes Blue, her little Frenchie who came into her life at just the right time.
I first learned about Blue when Rosie’s mom visited my studio during the open studios event back in May. She shared with me that her daughter had been through a difficult time, and that Blue had been her angel through it all.
The finished portrait painting was a total surprise. Rosie arrived at my studio with her mom for the big reveal, and her reaction was absolutely pure delight.
“This is so incredible!”
“It's so HER.... exactly her!”
The details that make Blue unmistakably Blue were especially appreciated... her wonderfully crooked ear and that heart-shaped patch of fur on her chest.
“The heart… it’s so perfect.”
As Rosie talked about Blue, it became very clear why this gift from her mom meant so much. “She’s my everything. We do everything together. She’s my bestie.”
Her mom later shared that Rosie was near tears as they left the studio because she was so happy. I have to admit, hearing that warmed my heart. When a portrait brings that kind of emotion, I know I got something important right.
A portrait of a beloved companion captures all those familiar details that make them unmistakably them. But when it’s right, it captures more than just a likeness. It reflects the bond and love that made them so special in the first place.
