I don’t even have copies of ‘The Call-back’ in my possession yet, but now my 8th chapbook of poems, ‘Small Joys’, and fourth in the annual series of Origami Poems Projects is out and available for free download/printing.

After this, I’m pumping the brakes on chapbooks for a bit to work on two full length manuscripts the next few months to get them ready to submit.

What You Almost Know

Inside, we can hear the crunch
of snow, how it trembles terrible
in the dark, like husks of wood—

How any instrument carries
a song on its skin in low hums—

We guess it fox, pattern recognition,
how the notes of each step would fall,
too quiet for dog, too subtle for rabbit—

A meeting at the edge of woods before
becoming the woods—

Stewart’s Point
Breakfast in bed, window open,
the long arm of the pier disappearing
into thick cordgrass across McCalleys
Creek, the water so low, anchor posts
showing how they touch earth, bare now,
barnacles etched in memory all along their
bodies, no secrets, the heave of the ocean
inconsequential, every rivulet in a glimmer,
knowing the way home—

We could crack a window, taste the air
still left from the night, inverted, notes
of smoke and salt, let it slip in, no labor
added to our breathing, easy as the sea
breeze that comes later, how the long
shower teasing live oaks, threads through
the bark, wraps any name called out
into the dark earth, knowing when to give,
knowing when to take—
