Fun little dive yesterday in Rockport Harbor. This anemone was showing off atop a ghost line. Always an adventure down there, look to the left and you'll see someone's lost fishing rod.

Yesterday a friend asked if I see any big fish in China Lake with the drone. This time of year, it's almost too easy, with the Largemouth Bass tending their spawning beds. It was fun to get some footage of this large female checking out our underwater drone. Look closely and you may see some alewives darting by. The lake is full of activity this time of year, above and below the surface!

It's good to be back! Yes, the alewives are back in China Lake eager to start the next generation of travelers. It is always special to see their activity from the surface this time of year, but even more special to be able to swim with them on this short part of their journey.

MUI travelled to Iceland last week, and of course we got some great underwater footage (unfortunately the ROV didn't make this trip, so everything was handheld). The images are from Silfra, a fissure in the mid-Atlantic ridge that falls along a glacier-fed lake. Visibility is known to be 200m, as we swam with Europe to our left and North America to our right. The colors were amazing, but also notice the textures of the volcanic rock, I believe is formed by Pahoehoe lava.

A few weeks ago, I had a sunny day for a dive in Camden Harbor. The fall bloom was in full swing, creating an unearthly green hue for a background. The solitary tunicates were glowing, the green crabs were defensive, as the rock crabs scavenged along the bottom with the sunken fall foliage. Not sure how this traffic cone landed straight up, but it seemed to guide the crustacean highway.

It's snowing in parts of Maine today, but this summer at 60ft deep in China Lake, it was 'snowing' biological debris from the more active, shallow layers. Our drone easily visited the deep spot in the lake, around 90ft (27m), and is rated to 490ft (150m)

The bass in China Lake are curious what kind of strange mechanical fish is swimming around. These shots have them in the shallows earlier in the summer. This time of year they hang out deeper, getting ready for the seasons to change.
