Looking down Main Street (downtown White Plains, NY) in 1928 and now, 2021, looking East to Mamaroneck Avenue. On the right, the former Home Savings Bank built in 1925. It was later repurposed as a Zanaro’s restaurant, which is now occupied by Buffalo Wild Wings.

In 1683, some 4,435 acres of land was purchased from the Weckquaeskeck Tribe by a group of men from Rye, now home to White Plains, originally called “Quarropas,” meaning “white marshes” or “white plains.” This name fit well with the lush marshes that were often covered by a heavy fog.
