Choosing a newborn photographer is a little different than choosing a photographer for any other type of session. Newborn photography requires specific experience, careful posing, and an understanding of how to safely and gently handle a brand new baby while creating beautiful, timeless portraits.
If you’re currently expecting and starting to research photographers, here are a few things I always recommend looking for. Make sure your photographer has experience specifically with newborns, not just general photography. Look for a consistent portfolio with clean editing, soft lighting, and safely posed babies. Ask about how the session flows — newborn sessions should always be calm, baby-led, and never rushed, with time built in for feeding, soothing, and cuddling. You’ll also want to make sure your photographer provides professionally finished images that are meant to be printed and displayed in your home, not just files that live on your phone.
After 10 years of photographing newborns, I can tell you that experience, safety, and consistency make all the difference when it comes to your baby’s first portraits. These are the images your child will grow up seeing on the walls and flipping through in albums years from now, so choosing the right photographer is an important decision.
Most families reserve their newborn session during pregnancy to make sure they have a spot within those first few weeks after baby arrives.
